Saw an article about a 29 going on 30 yr old lady who got back into Yoga after having a baby. Minus the baby part I'm the same age LoL! I was considering getting into yoga. I have some pink yoga pants and some black ones (if I can find them or I can buy another $10 pair.) I watched a 20min. video. Health wise I've done some "poses" for physical therapy a "bridge" thing but never stuck to the physical therapy exercises (bridge and that spine twist pose being a few yoga poses). In fact most of physical therapy was yoga poses I just chose not to exercise.

I was wondering if other Aspies did yoga or started it recently and how did/do you like it? Any thoughts? :-)

I've practiced on and off for decades. I never got into the advanced poses, but the practice is more about linking breath with movement. My favorites lately have been the Element yoga dvds, but I always go back to Ravi & Ana kundalini dvds.

Yoga is great and it will build a good amount of coordination and flexibility, it can relieve a lot of tension. I think once a week is a beneficial amount of time for Yoga.

You could look into Qi Gong or Tai Chi, it follows similar principles to Yoga but the movements are more dynamic. Yoga is a great place to start and you can even focus on the balance and static stretches before moving on to the more advanced moves like full moon or crane.

Ya from research Yoga is different. There are different poses you can try to master vs. run X miles or walk X amount or do X reps EVERYDAY! UGH! One day want to try to master the crab thing go ahead. The cat thing sure why not. etc. :-)

I've done a bit/don't do enough.

It's good to be limber. Also, my balance and coordination improved, too. I found it most beneficial to do it in a class setting where you're listening to the instructors voice and following along. Much easier to get into the breathing & meditative aspects of it that way, IMO. Plus I found live instruction much much much easier to follow than trying to get the same from a video online.

I don't stretch nearly enough lately. I really ought to get back into the regular habit of it. Even if I just do some very very basic yoga poses for 10-20mins a couple times a week I feel a benefit for it. Thanks for the reminder.

I did yoga when I was a kid but I didn't like it. My mom does yoga and she's always trying to convince to go with her to yoga but I say no because I still don't like it. Most people who do it find it relaxing but I just find it painful.

I need to get back to it -- I stopped about six years ago (long story, had a massive upheaval/life crisis), but before I stopped I had been doing yoga on a regular basis for about four years, and I really loved it.

I found that it increased my flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, and it even toned my figure and trimmed me in a few inches by toning muscles. My shape changed subtly. I really like the increased strength too. Just holding some of those poses kind of works your muscle tone without even doing much but holding the posture.

I also felt calmer after a session. It's a very restful thing to do, mentally and emotionally.

I did it from a DVD made by a practicing instructor, so it felt almost like taking a class from her. I'm strictly NOT a "joiner" so I hate actual classes and having to schlepp to one, or go to a gym.

I'm no good if I have to go somewhere and be in a group of people -- I've rapidly given up anything I've tried that was like that. Yet when I got this DVD I kept up my yoga for years, doing it about every three days.

I only stopped because a sh!t-ton of disruption happened in my life; I had to move four times in eleven months, my life went upside down and I still haven't reinstated some of my old routines and ways of life, which is not a good thing. I dearly want to start back on my yoga but I'm battling a lot of inertia and not coping well.

A DVD works best for me because I can follow it in the privacy of home. The one I used was by a woman called Barbara Benagh, and she seems to have years of experience teaching. She has a soothing voice and I really recommend her DVDs.

Yes, have practiced yoga since I was 15, and am now 70 this year! Especially when I was working, it was of great
help with stress. Used to do 20 minutes before leaving for work. I also love Pilates, which I do about 4 times a week.
Pilates is more dynamic than yoga, and great fun. As far as changing the "look" of a body, I feel that weights
and swimming, and maybe ballet, are the best exercises. I love it that I can do yoga and Pilates anywhere, outdoors
is really great. Take care, and keep up your practice!

Yes, I do yoga 6 days a week. I have a hip condition that requires me to keep the muscles around my hips and spine strong, and I've found that yoga does the trick. I can't run or even jog without the weight of impact causing inflammation to the bad hip. The hard part for me was actually sticking to it, but once I got in the habit of doing it, it's like a drug. For me anyway. Now that its a part of my daily routine, I can't break away from it. When I first started doing it I was so out of balance but it got better with time and consistency.

Yoga is not just some exercise that you can just get great benefits from by doing it once in a while (here in the west it's the "in" thing to do). While yes, any yoga is probably better than none at all, it's a practice that requires your entire self. The benefits you can receive from that lifestyle can be life changing if you take approach it in a holistic manner. You're not just working on your muscles, you're also working on your mind, breathing, balance, awareness etc.

Light On Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar is a fantastic book to read if you are wanting a comprehensive guide to poses (Iyengar style yoga) and some yogic theology.
