I got all the way to the end basically (where Rabanastre is about to be attacked), and then I just kinda lost interest. Here's my basic lowdown so far:
The Bad
The storyline had potential, but it definately took a blow from the awful character development and lack of a true villian (Sephiroth, Kefka, Kuja, Sin, ect.). The Judges were cool, but they could have been some of the best FF Villians yet had they been more developed and featured more in the game. And, as for Vayne, he was a horrible villian... I could care less seeing him die off or not. And don't even get me started on Vaan. He makes Tidus look like Samuel L. Jackson. Heck, the only character that was interesting was Balthier. Everyone else was very supbar IMO.
The Good
As for the good stuff, the graphics are great as usual, but one thing I welcomed was the increased difficulty. That was one thing Square messed up on with FFX (making it too easy), and it's actually refreshing to see you die for once and having to exhale when you finally beat a boss. The new battle system is easily the best addition to the game. Gambits add another dimension to the game itself, and the ease of use to attack and cast spells without while the battle is paused will please any of the old school FF fans. The hunts are a nice break from the main storyline and a good way to level up and get items, as opposed to the usual level grinding. People might disagree with me on this part, but I thought the new summons were very cool, and I thought it was awesome that most of them were made after the old FF villians (Zeromus especially, he was always kickass). As for something a little less known, I personally thought the optional battle with Gilgamesh made the game. *SPOILER*It was so kick ass to see him pull out all of the previous FF Hero's weapons and use them on you! The battle music was as awesome as it was in FF5 as well!*SPOILER*
Overall, I think this Final Fantasy focused more on the flashy stuff such as graphics and the battle system than it did on the more traditional stuff such the storyline and character development. That did dissapoint me some, especially since the game had such monster expectations, but all-in-all, it wasn't that bad. If they would have hired a more competent Storyline and Character Developer, this could have been a masterpiece, but without those two key elements, this Final Fantasy falls a bit short against most of the others. Still though, it's definately worth your money if you are debating on whether to get it or not, and I recommend it to anyone that is in to RPGs (and, of course, it's an obvious must have for FF Fans). 7/10
