Hey folks. My name's Dan, but for simplicity's sake let's just go by my screen name I've been visiting this site on and off for a while, but I finally decided to join up. I've really been wanting to meet (or at least interact) with other aspies for a long time, so I'm really looking forward to my time on the Wrongplanet forums
First a bit about myself and my experience with autism...I've known that I had Asperger's since I was almost 14 years old (I'm 18 and a half now), but apparantly I was diagnosed at age 3. After studying the syndrome I always found this strange, from what I gathered most children are usually diagnosed no earlier than 5 years old. Regardless, I was apparantly an early diagnosis, so I spent a lot of my childhood being helped. I was high-functioning - I was able to attend regular schooling all the way from grades 1-12, and though I struggled socially and in some minor areas of work, I was able to make it through. I'm now in university studying creative writing and music. That said, I still struggle from a lot of problems associated with the syndrome - especially socially. Though I am more than socially capable, I find myself going through bouts of depression (not clinical - just negative mood swings), and particually find it hard to trust and become attached to people, and hold long term relationships.
My obsessive interest would have to be games, but music comes a very close second. I'm currently playing Counter-Strike: Source, Dawn of War and Oblivion, while in terms of music my favorite bands/artists atm are Metallica, Nightwish, Dead Letter Circus (a local band here in Brisbane), Rammstien and System of a Down...that's just off the top of my head, I like heaps of bands, usually in the metal and alternative rock genres. I also play trumpet, know basic piano and am learning guitar. My main musical focus, however, is composition. One of my hopes is to learn to write music for computer games - I love being able to evoke a sense of mood, setting or character through composition, just as my favorite game soundtracks have been able to do.
So that's me in a nutshell...I'm sure you'll get to know more about me as I post on the forums. As I said, I'm looking forward to my time here and being able to interact with other aspies
