Help! I work with someone with Aspergers, very intelligent at many things, but so socially impaired that he's likely to get fired, and so easily overwhelmed or overstimulated that he seems unable to communicate with his supervisors. Yet he has so many talents that are going to waste in his current job. Because he is employed, he's not eligible for vocational rehabilition or case management services or government $ support. Advice? Ideas?

Are you NT? It sounds like it to me.

If you are, and can you give me some
specific things that a NT see's in this person's
traits and characteristics?

If you fall into the AS/HFA sliding scale,
then I could still use this perspective?

Hmmmmm?

Are there any local Autism Centers which may provide just such training for him???

Also, do he have a diagnosis? If he does, I would think Vocational Rehabilitation could help (though he would most likely go on a waiting list).

he has a definite diagnosis of aspergers and tells me he tested extremely high on IQ stuff. he's not eligible for voc rehab cuz he has a job albeit one not using any of his talents. problem is, he doens't have social skills, can't read cues, can't seem to express much of anything with supervisors. and of course many of the folks who supervise "unskilled" work aren't that good at communicating anyway.
so what we need is advice on do-it-yourself career planning. so many of those who post regularly make mention of job frustrations or challenges of college. how do you get those jobs or college placements without a parent with lots of $ or connections to people?

What job is it?
Have you shown him this site?
I'm a bagger, and I've had to fake social a lot.

Some Aspie friends and I have had similar issues. Sometimes, programmes used for younger Aspies can help if they are adapted for adult use eg. time management, writing "to do" lists.

I don't fake being social because I found when I did, it didn't come over right and people still were wary of me. Having an official diagnosis means there have been a few accommodations in the workplace for me, but some employers are much more willing to help than others in this regard.
