Lately I've been thinking that it might be fun to learn to play an instrument. Since my years of writing books as given me the fastest typing speed of anyone I know, I was considering the keyboard. Do you think typing skills would make it easier to learn how to play such an instrument?

barely. you have trained finger speed, but this only helps on the high levels of playing keyboard, in the learning stage, speed is not an issue yet, so knowing to type doesn't help you much, not at first
