what went wrong in my case?(psychological assesment, etc)
When I was at age 11 I had a psychological assesment because there was an suspicion of add. They found out that my verbal iq was over 150 and my percormance iq was at 109. Diagnosis: Non verbal learning disorder.
I was tested on more time(different kind of iq test) to confirm this(also age 11), they diagnosed me with executive dysfunction(my working memory was below average) and once again NVLD. The executive function they said would cause me to have trouble solving novel problems.
The psychologist all said I would be able to pursue the high school level which leads to university.
Right know I am in university, I always have been good at just learning, I dont comprehend anything to a significant level. I always felt stupid and dumb in jobs(like working at a restaurants), around other people etcetera, I have gotten comments at jobs about me being dumb. I also withdrew more and more from people at age 15-16(became very anxious). I think this is mainly due to my lower intelligence then the people and friends around me.
All these years my parent and family thought that my weirdness akwardness was caused by my superior intelligence(verbal iq), and I myself started believing this also.
Its coming more to me know that it was caused by my poor intelligence(because verbal iq is only memorizing and communicating on a superficial level), kind of an ironic story. I also know now that I will not be able to get a decent paying job because I just cant think on my own, I can only reproduce.
I have been extremely anxious over the past years and even picked up an internet addiction(presumely this causes braincells do die of, and make people dumber) Could this all been prevented by some more capable psychologist who understand the consequences of certain outcomes of an intelligence test? Excuse me if I ramble to much, I tried to make a more understandable topic lost track of my own point in the middle.
Hi Warmsand,
Please don't get too bogged down in the results of intelligence tests. If you do any reading on the subject you will soon find that there is huge controversy over what they measure and whether they are actually meaningful anyway. They certainly don't have any 'consequences' in terms of dictating your life course in the way that you imply. Your post itself demonstrates an ability to generate and reflect on ideas: I doubt you are simply reproducing someone else's opinions of your functioning here.
What is largely agreed on is that we all have strengths and weaknesses. These are likely to be comprised partly from inherited attributes (which we can't change) and partly from what we learn and practice (over which we have some influence). Try to work out what your strengths are, rather than focusing on what you can't do, and look for opportunities to use these to show yourself in your best light. Also, bear in mind that things are almost certainly not as bleak as you think they are, and any genuine weaknesses can be improved on through practice and / or conscious effort to learn.
The fact you have successfully made it to university should tell you that you are not 'dumb', even if you have difficulties in some areas, and it is totally acceptable not to have found your 'niche' in life yet, so be a little easier on yourself
P.S. If you have found an empirical study linking Internet use to brain atrophy please post the link as I am sure it will make alarming reading for many on this forum
