I think this has been discussed before but I can't find it...

Does anyone else here have a real problem saying another person's name when you're talking to them? NT's do it all the time when they're addressing people. I find it extremely uncomfortable (similar to eye contact) and only do it if I absolutely have to. I can use people's names if I'm talking about them, just not if I'm talking to them. And I don't really like hearing my own name either, although that's not quite as bad as saying someone else's.

I rarly address people by name. But I put it down to the fact that I have a really bad memory so I don't remember (or even try?) anyones name. Im in campus accomidation now, living with 5 other people but it always takes me at least 4 months before I know everyones name, because I don't use them so I don't really need to remember them.

Since I'm really suckish at saying names, I'll just start off by saying "hey" instead of adressing them properly. No one ever notices and it seems to work.

I don't use other people's names in conversation except when trying to get their initial attention. It sounds weird if I use it too much. It is really strange is hearing my own name, anytime, ever. It shocks or rattles me. I can somewhat tolerate it if it is the attention getting thing. But if it is used during a conversation it sounds so...odd.

I'm terrible at remembering names as well and find it very awkward adressing people by their name. I rarely initiate conversations though so it's easier to avoid when someone else speaks to me first. Hearing my own name doesn't bother me as much.

I rarely use names too. I'm so bad at remembering names that even when I know for sure what someone's name is I avoid using it just in case I get it wrong. I hate names.

I used to be really embarrassed to use people's names when talking to them. I kind of forced myself to get over it.

I have a really hard time remembering people's names, so I don't use them in conversation very much. I hate trying to get people's attention, too.

I did go through a phase, my mom told me, when I was 3 or 4 until I was in first grade or so, when I wouldn't address any of my relatives by name except my mom, my dad, and my sister. I have a large extended family who all lived in the same area, so this was a big deal!

I hardly ever address people by name. It's just something I find difficult.

I forget the names as i struggle to put names to faces. I know i know the person but forget the name.

Eventally i remember the name but in my line of work people have thier real name and thier Job title.

People use the job title at work and real name socially. I cant do that as i struggle to put the 2 names to the one object so i tend to stand ot as i call people by thier job title all the time.

Its easy when they are higher rank as they all have the same name "Sir" :D

OMG out of all the things I’ve been learning since I found out about AS, this is one thing I really thought WAS just me!! !!

There are only two people who’s names I can use with no hesitation – my sister and my best friend. I barely even address my own husband by name, and when I do I’m extremely conscious of it and it feels very unnatural.

I wonder what this is all about?

YIKES! I use my father's and mother's names, but really NOBODY elses! I always considered the idea, that someones favorite sound is their name, STUPID!

I totally have a problem with calling people by their names. I find it extremely difficult; I just feel so uncomfortable about doing it. However, I do call some people by their first name; namely, my parents, my siblings, my aunts/uncles, and my cousins.

I was so glad to see this post, because now I know that I am not the only one with this problem.
It's a big relief for my that others with AS have difficulty calling people by their first names.

I don't any longer. I've been in too many meetings in the past with over 20 people where it was necessary to say names in order to get the right person speaking. Also, once I worked with remote offices in conference calls, it was essential since many of them were on the phone and couldn't see who was talking. That got me over that particular problem because I became desensitized to it.

I do have a horrible time remembering names and I frequently give people the wrong name in my mind then consistently call them by the wrong name. That is embarassing.
