I have a bit of a thing about attempting to put music into genres generally - case in point: what exactly is "Heavy Metal" these days? AC/DC? Green Day? Black Sabbath? Slipknot? Led Zeppelin? Cradle Of Filth? Metallica? Van Halen? Poison? Aerosmith? Thin Lizzy? Rammstein? Creed? Fact is, you can make a claim for all these bands to be "Heavy Metal", but can anyone say they like them all, and all other stylistically wildly diverse quote-unquote "Metal" bands? I doubt it very much, so how can anyone claim to like "Heavy Metal" per se? You can get into sub-division of genre, but then I start to get really cross: "Yes, I'm really into Neo-garage-swamp-rock-jazz-funk-alt-house-country myself"
I was after the new "YOURCODENAMEIS:MILO" CD the other day (its really rather good btw - the best post-punk-industrial-progressive-metal-screamo CD I've heard so far this year ) - HMV had it under "pop/rock" and Virgin had it under "Metal"..... well, which is it? I had to buy the new "Fischerspooner" CD (the best techno-pop-beat-..... oh, never mind....) from the "dance" section for gawdssake..... I felt violated.... I nearly even touched several rap CDs when getting it.... *shudder*
Anyway, sorry for hijacking your thread with a rant, but this whole deal ticks me off.... There's only 4 kinds of music: Good, bad, indifferent and rap (bad just doesn't cover it somehow......) I'd love to run a record shop..... "Excuse me, but where can I find the new 'Whitney Houston' CD, please?". "It's in the 'stinking, filthy, unlistenable c**p' section, love".... Ah... bliss......
