Many aspies are into Pokemon and other trivial useless stuff. I, on the other hand, have been indifferent to Pokemon my whole life. I am interested in languages and working on my French.

Mine are useful.
I haven't been into anything as special interest that was really completely useless, I don't think.
Obsession over tv show appears pretty useless, but it did at least help me with writing skills when I posted on forums to talk about the show.

Not really. My special interests more often than not are collecting things rather than collecting information. Currently and for the past year or so, has been hockey cards. Not that useful. Information wise I can remember all of the stats for the past few seasons for Boston and Edmonton in the NHL. Still not useful. I think the last time I had an interest that was useful was dinosaurs, about 12-13 years ago, and only because we were doing dinosaurs in school as a topic.

Being interested in French is especially useful. There are certain languages that are supposed to build "social capital" and French is one of them. I believe the others were...German and Italian, maybe? Perhaps English? I learned that a long time ago and thought it was interesting.

In case you never heard the expression, "social capital" is like a figurative bank account with good manners, style, etc in it that helps you get along in life because the more of it you have, the more well rounded and important a person you seem.

Having an interest in adult autism has been useful to me because autistic people are generally nice to me and will help me in return whenever I need it. It's a rewarding interest. I would hate to have an interest in a group like sociopaths and have to get to know terrible people all day. :S That's an awful thought.

Being good at languages is always useful, especially when english isn't your first language. Luckily english is my first language as I am terrible at languages. I learned french at school for 8 years and all I can say is hello, please, I like fishing(I don't even like fishing) and the mountains and the odd colour and vehicle.

This is something that actually frustrates me a lot. Some of my interests are useful (such as running or photography). Some, like video games, aren't.

The problem is, as I'm sure many people here experience too, that my interest is pretty much 100% or 0% with very little in between, and little control over where it gets pulled towards.

My life would probably be dramaticly better if I could maintain continual interest in the more productive hobbies. But I have yet to figure out how to do that.

Sometimes, yeah. Technology is one of them, and I have a fine memory for the impersonal details about people when it interests or benefits me. What instructors worked as previously, who knows what languages, etc. Never names, birthdays, or any "regular" stuff.

My problem has been more my learning styles and lack of practical application. A dozen Reddit threads about IT horror stories is insightful, but rarely translates to skill.

That's true, and it depends in part on the individual. Video games aren't necessarily useful, but if you enjoy socializing in MMOs you might become more comfortable talking to new people through it. Others could just take the negatives and feel worse about it.

Art ... I am now an artist, have had my work exhibited in art galleries and museums, and I sell photos online.

Languages ... I have a job where I'm called on to review the quality of English translations and sometimes translate into Spanish.

...

Nope. None of my interests would be helpful or useful as a career or in a job. The skills I use for my interests might be useful in some way though. :P

Well, my special interest is making chiptunes and really music in general. I am learning to play piano as well.

I think some people might consider that useless, but others might feel differently.

Whatever the case, it's one heck of a conversation starter. :P

I may end up becoming an assistant for a local organ repairman. It involves knowledge of building circuit boards that make sounds. So that could be a useful application of my musical and electronic interests.

OK let's pick some random stuff.

Taekwondo was a useful interest and continues to be useful since I can still apply my knowledge.
Programming was a useful interest, I can always quickly code myself something simple when I need it or make modifications on existing code.
I was only interested in learning English so I could better understand the games on my bootlegged 128-in-1 multicartridges, so video games have served as a motive for learning something useful. Very useful in fact, as many articles online are writting in English.
Personality disorders are a cool interest... and it might be handy knowing about them one day. 8)
Knowing some Chinese characters is always good to impress people and helps with shopping at an Asian supermarket.
Pokemon and anime have been useful conversation topics to connect with others.

I think most interests can be turned into something useful.
Perhaps not necissarily into a career, but something useful.

Observing cultures made me more functional. More mobility in the NTs' realm. It made me wiser and more assertive.

Other than collecting random information... That's the most useful interest I have.

The rest involves arts, and handicrafts. I'm better off making things for myself than buying it for prices as twice or trice as expensive. I could evolve these skills as long as I have the means.

And oh, IMPROVISATION.

I like to explore places. Both in real life and on the internet. I like learning the names of all the native plants and animals where I live. And also local history as well as history in general. And photographing all that stuff.

Idk if that's useful. I think something like an interest in carpentry or financial investing would qualify more as useful.
