Every day is like climbing a mountain when I'd rather be in a cave. I've been working full time as a cleaner for 2 months now. I can handle the job, no problem. The people are driving me insane. I am attentive to my social skills, but honestly, why do people have to pull me from one direction to the other. There's too many people. Each with their special personalities. Each of equal value. I can't stand it; I don't care about any of them. Why do they care if I'm interested in their lives? Why do they want me to care? I keep acting the part, but I get nothing from it and it costs me a lot.

It's the emptiness that's getting to me. The sheer nothing that people have to offer.

It sucks, I feel the same way at my job. I feel trapped, it sucks. Where do you work? What do you do? At my job I have to talk to clients a lot on web sessions and help them use our software, it sucks. I hate it.

That's people for you.

They want somebody who cares about them.

I wish this wasn't wearing you down.

I don't know if this will give you any comfort, but I know exactly how you feel. I feel the same way about my job...too much meaningless social interaction. Things will get better for you.

Maybe you would be better working with intelligent people, although they are a rare find. I also have to socialize a lot at work, its really not an autistic friendly job. I don't mind socializing though if its not too overwhelming, its kind of necessary if you share space with others to get along.

I don't think it matters what industry you are working in, being social seems to be a part of the working experience.

I need to work part time, but I'm working full time now, I spend the weekends recovering and have planned regular short breaks/vacations from work.

That's very social. My job as a cleaner is pretty independent, but there are co-workers and clients to deal with.

They want everyone to care about them.

Thanks. :)

I wish. The Monday after the Friday attacks in Paris I said to my co-worker that the attacks in Paris were horrible. She said "what happened in Paris?" How could someone be so insular.

Maybe the coworkers are being social to pass the time at work.

I'm more the quiet reader type myself. I'm known as The Wolfman, so there's no pressure to small-talk socialize. My socialization is based upon the Wolfman's proclivities

One of my special interests is the weather.....a very popular small-talk topic

That seems to be a very nifty interest, people love to talk weather. One woman told me that she loved that I was up to date on world news and events, all I was doing was keeping up to date with the news.

It is interesting how neurotypical types judge the ability to integrate with popular culture, topics our media.
