Einstein, Newton, and Darwin
Hi, my name is Phyllis. I'm sort of used to people thinking I am awkward and not liking me...or thinking I am a know-it-all because there seems to be little filter from my brain to my mouth. But, it seems kind of silly, because how else can you learn, if you don't talk about things? Even those things that most people want to ignore out of fear or whatever. Even worse, when a female has Asperger's, well, since there aren't many females with Asperger's, it just makes your peer group even smaller. I apologize if I start to seem scattered a bit, but this is my first time trying to connect with other Asperger's people, so it feels like I have a lot to address.
Before I get to the meat of the convo, I would like to say that I briefly scanned the forum rules, and there was this part about attacking other people. Since, Asperger's people are so direct as far as I've seen, it seems that many things could be taken as an insult esp. since it's hard to read tone in text. For instance, I could ask a question such as "Do you really think that is correct? and one person might be a bit defensive and think you are being rude, when it's a simple direct question. So let me start by saying, that if I ever ask a question, it is highly unlikely that I am trying to be rude and much more likely that I am simply trying to get to the bottom of things. Also, there is a rule that said something about duplicating previous posts. I'm not sure how you could know if you are duplicating posts, since some threads have several hundred pages, and I don't know many people who would want to read them all. That is an insane amount of reading, lol. So I also apologize if I am duplicating.
Moving on to the topic, I think Asperger's people and others who are close to them know that people like Einstein, Darwin, Newton, Gates, and many others have or had Asperger's. I glanced at some of the subject (philosophy, religion, science, etc) and I didn't really see what I was looking for. I don't really think you can ever completely get over some of the pain associated with the disorder and other's not understanding it very well, but for the most part I have, so I don't really care to go into all that. But I know some people aren't quite there yet. (I know my grammar is reckless, lol, but I'm not too concerned about it) Anyway, since I believe many Asperger's people have brilliant ideas, I would love to see threads that don't just ask questions about a topic, but are more of "idea" sharing threads, or maybe "fun with Asperger's" threads. And NOT just puzzles, lol. I'm pretty sure we are more than just puzzles
I think some interesting and fun things could be discussed whereas the degree requirements in society are not required as a pastime discussion. For instance, I seem to be stuck on this concept lately (but there are many more): Einstein proposed that dark matter exists, but he himself often had to correct his own theories. I have a theory myself that it isn't as much dark matter, as clear matter existing in the darkness of space. One of the things that has been noticed as initial proof of dark matter is that light refracts when passing through "dark" matter as it is called today. But dark items don't "refract" light, they absorb light. However, clear substances like water or glass DO in fact refract light. Also, where do the gasses go that are emitted from various celestial objects? And it seems that since most substances that we know on earth have a tendency to attract each other like beads of water first pooling, then flowing to rivers, then flowing to the ocean in such an attractive effort, wouldn't "some" things in space have the potential to do the same? So if gasses are emitted from various objects, and they collected in large "pools" for lack of a better word right now, couldn't it be safe to say that "clear" matter would possibly be a large collection of gasses that are refracting light that it passes through? Now I don't ask these questions to be a know-it-all, I'm just truly curious about things like this, and if anyone has a reason why this theory is wrong, then I would love to hear that as well. Because that is how we learn sometimes.
Well, thanks to anyone who read that long-winded post, lol, and I hope to hear from someone. Thanks again.

Welcome to WP.
Gosh.
Didnt read every word you wrote. Not yet.
Skipped to the last part. Gotta say a couple of things.
1) Einstein (I'm 90 percent sure) did NOT say anything about "dark matter" (think that it's post 1970 concept).
2) "Dark matter" is not literally necessarily 'dark' in color. That's just a figure of speech. Dark matter, and Dark Energy, are both called "dark" because they are mysterious. Supposedly they are both out there but we cant find them.
3) "Omitting", and "emitting" are not the same thing.
4)Stars emit light. The don't emit gas.
5) Water flows from mountain tops to streams/rivers/ the ocean not because it's drawn to other water. It does that because of gravity. Water seeks the lowest level so it flows down mountains to form streams.
Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I am well aware of the difference between omit (to eliminate) and emit (to give off), but I'm not above the occasional brain fart when typing quickly, lol. People miss a lot of things like the differences between affect/effect and the simpler things like too/to/two usage, and it peeves me a little, so thank u for catching that.
I have edited.
As far as not finding dark matter or energy yet, a program just aired not long ago saying that at least some dark matter has been found, hence the acknowledgment that light is refracted in dark matter.
And I disagree with the gravity concept of water pooling. A lot of things are affected by gravitational pull, but water doesn't attract to everything. Mines are full of minerals that are clumped together. As a matter of fact, most things that you can think of are clumped or in layers. The forces that affect this are not just gravitational in my opinion. And that is part of my issue with current theories. Another pet peeve of current theories, is that two items occurring together are often considered to be directly related by cause/effect. However, Correlation does not prove causation and various factors are often overlooked. As for who coined the term dark matter, I believe you are correct that it was not Einstein's term, but I don't consider this issue much for this reason: Even a poor terminology can inhibit progress when certain terms, phrases, or misinformation can provide a sort of mental block for progress. And as for stars emitting gas or not, I disagree, and that may be a personal theory as well, but here is the issue. Solar flares are the most basic occurrence that I can think of where as per definition a broad spectrum of emissions are released. Since the sun is composed primarily of hydrogen and helium (both gases), I feel it stands to reason that during a solar flare some gasses would be released. Thank you so much for posting. I would love to hear more ideas from you.
Well...stars do give off (I'm not gonna 'pass') gas occasionally (like in solar flares). Even the earth belches occasionally ( like in volcanic eruptions).
It even occurred to me that you might have hit upon the right idea for the wrong reason: dark matter might be "clear". If a planet were like one big glass bead completely transparent to light then it would be hard for astronomers to see because it would not interact with light. But if had the same mass as say the Earth it would be (in theory) detectable via "gravitational lensing". Its mass would bend local space (as per a normal planet of its mass) and bend light passing near it. Except a real earth sized ball of glass would not really be as transparent as a crystal ball, or glass bead. After a mile or so even the clearest glass would be opaque.
Glass is normal matter- a planet sized ball of glass would actually block light after a certain depth. So an actual glass planet wouldnt really be invisible in the visible light spectrum. But what we call dark matter might be a kind of matter that fails to interact with visible light- and would be transparent- even a thousands of miles thick chunk of it. But it would be gravitationally similar to normal matter. So an earth sized ball of the stuff would gravitionallly lense the light- even though light would pass through it (just like neutrinos pass through your body, and through the whole body of the Earth like it isnt there).
Loving your convo so far. Thank you. However, you can call it the wrong reason that has brought me to this conclusion, but don't be fooled into thinking that when I give one reason, there aren't others as well. For instance, I have considered that the transparency of such matter would in fact make it hard for astronomers to discover. Absolutely! I'm not sure that it can be proven that a mile of the lightest glass would be opaque (but I don't disagree either), but I can certainly tell you that a mile of our gaseous atmosphere is quite transparent.
Also, don't even get me started on bending space or time travel! lol. These kinds of topics really get me going. Wish I had a scholarship from a college that catered somewhat to disabled persons. I went to our largest college for 1 year after getting an associates at a junior college. And I made straight A's (except one class that I didn't take the exam for because I decided to quit already), but I left because some of the administration was so mean to me. Some of the instructors were amazing, but one literally seemed to make it her goal to make my life a living hell (can I say that if it's used as a place not a curse?) every single day of that class! I almost cried thinking about it, but I'm shaking it off, lol.
Well, it's not a lot of really bad handicaps, like I don't need a wheelchair or anything like that, but I have a LOT of tedious things that are more or less mental and some physical handicaps. Like of course, the Aspergers, several sleep disorders (RLS which I didn't even know was a sleep disorder til I underwent a sleep study, sleep apnea w hypopneas, alternating insomnia & hypersomnia, which is likely in part due to what I consider a mild bipolar disorder) so it's really hard to keep a normal sleep schedule. Sometimes I'm up days. Sometimes nights. And the bipolar just keeps my mind racing even more when I'm on the manic end, and I try not to let the depression end stay with me long with help from God. When I'm in the manic end, I don't feel like I act really bizarre like some bipolars, I just get into that strong or insatiable thirst for knowledge that keeps me up nights or sometimes I get a creative whimsy. I painted my personal interpretation of Edvard Munch's The Scream not long ago. I love it so much! And tonight, I have been bouncing all over between painting my snowman art, reading the bible, perusing this forum, facebook, watching Ricki and the Flash, cooking my extended thanksgiving dinner since a friend gave us a 2nd turkey when we already had one, lol. cleaning, playing with my cat, etc. Just major multi-tasking stuff. I think the bipolar goes hand in hand with ptsd from my Asperger's though. People were really really mean to me when I was a kid too. I was extremely quiet and I guess people felt I was weak and easily bullied, so naturally, they did, a lot. So even though I try to get over most of that these days, sometimes, that ptsd from basically a lot of mental abuse comes back and I go to tears, and when depression hits a bipolar....it's really hard to snap out of. Then add spacing out and rocking back n forth n stuff from the autistic stuff, and I kind of scare the family. Which makes me feel even worse. I also have a bad back that I had to have steroid injections for. Most days it is okay now, but sometimes, I walk like an old lady when I first get up until I walk it off. I have a plate and two screws in my ankle as well. All in all, I have days where I feel like I can dance around and make my family laugh, smile, and have fun. And I try to make sure my kids understand life quite clearly, but then I have probably about 5-10 days a month (non consecutively) where I look like death warmed over from pain or sleep issues. Unfortunately, people don't hire you for 2-3 weeks each month that I've ever seen, and my call-in rate is high from doctor appointments or sickness. Blah. Hopefully that question never comes up again, lol.
I kind of want to add....i dont think a handicap or even multiple handicaps define us. I hope u dont judge. But they are just obstacles to overcome. I feel like the more hurdles u can jump really does make u stronger or builds/colors your character. Sometimes in the best way. If people can see your struggles, sometimes theirs seem easier

Light do no bend by going through dark matter, but from the gravitational field generated by dark matter; something that "ordinary" matter can do too.
Dark matter The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.

Not true: http://jonathans-stories.com/non-fictio ... osing.html

Well, see now Tollorin. I also have a problem with the idea that light obeys gravitational laws. When light hits a source and refracts, it doesn't just refract toward the ground, it refracts in all directions which is why light distributes evenly across your body in a swimming pool. Also, when light leaves a star and is emitted into space, it doesn't all bend toward the closest planet or the one with the strongest gravitational pull. No! It in fact, goes directly from the source and hits anything and everything in a direct line. If you lay a mirror on the ground, does light reflect downward toward the ground only. No! It reflects in a straight line and continues until it hits another object. It does not go up like a bouncy ball (okay, rubber ball....I like cute phrases, lol) and then come down and back up to a shorter height and back down toward gravity until it eventually finds a resting spot as anything with a gravitational pull would. No! And I also dispute the an idea that I heard someone say about light continuing on forever. If that were the true, we wouldn't see random stars in the night sky that are closest to our solar system, we would see all the stars in the Universe and be in perpetual light.
Thank you kraftiekortie! I agree
