I'm sick of people looking at autistic children having meltdowns and seeing them as "immature brats," so I wrote a poem about meltdowns that goes like this:

Sirens sounding
Heart is pounding—
extremely hard
Looky here; a crying bard!
They say, “You’re bad!”
But I’m just sad
There’s no need to yell
Or tell me that I’ll go to (heck)
And to behave this way is a sin
Fire’s already licking my skin
My face and arms are sunset red
You tell me it’s all in my head
As heated darkness consumes my soul
My body is torn; I no longer feel whole
Anger, depression, hate
It seems the gods have written me quite a horrid fate
You say that I’m being naughty
And that I’m acting so haughty
But you sure do not see
The maelstrom inside of me

That's a really nice poem. I can relate to it.

Thank you. The world does need to learn about meltdowns, because it seems that most people just see it as being a brat or a troublemaker. No, teacher, I'm not trying to get on your nerves.

Very true. I wish people would care more about the person having the meltdown, rather than focus on the other students.

The poem reminds me a great deal of what my autistic daughter goes through almost everyday, and what I've experienced, too.
