Hello,

I’ve decided to do the autistic or person with autism survey again. I’ve made two one for autistics and one for people with autistic kids(whether they are still a child or are an adult), if you come under both categories you can answer both. It’s a little bit different (not by much) than the other one. I thought it’d be easier to share if it is in surveymonkey. It’s only 4 questions.

For those who are autistic:

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/HG357ZD

For those who have autistic children(whether they are a child or an adult):

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/HG6GCBK

I’d be very grateful if you could answer and/or share the links elsewhere.

Thanks.

I could have done with a "don't care" for the first question. I voted "autistic" because I figure it's mostly the "person with autism" prefers who have a problem with it.

Some people think that saying "autistic person" is wrong because it puts the disability first and not the person. They think you should say "person with autism". Personally, I don't care.

Huh...considering how many languages switch up the noun/modifier order on everything else, I can't see the difference.

But in English it would sound strange to say the 'person tall' instead of the 'tall person'.

Yeah. I guess I mean more, they think it's defining people by their disability, rather than seeing them as a person. There's a rather on-point criticism of this mindset here: http://chaoticidealism.livejournal.com/52418.html

I don't care. I only prefer autistic because it's shorter to say. I only get annoyed when people correct my grammar and word choice, so the "people with autism" correctors will get a big eye roll from me. I am so tempted to ask them if they are "people with idiocy."

I wonder if all these people who are so bent on 'saving' the 'less fortunate' realize that it's just another form of 'manifest destiny'.

Biff: Come Muffy, we must cast ourselves upon the 'lessers'
Muffy: Oh Biff, don't call them that, call them 'people with less'. They need to know how wonderful it is to be like us.
Biff: Oh Muffy, you're so smart!! I could just eat you up and get more smart myself!"
Muffy: Oh Biff, I'm not smart, I just don't like to see those poor people hurt by our labels. It's just so unfair.....
Biff: That's my Muff! Always thinking of the other guy or gal!!

People say worse things all the time. Like, I dunno:
"You're too smart, stop doing this/that!"
"You're too old for me to have to explain this."
"Don't play stupid with me."

Ha! Read the article/blog and it makes perfect sense. Best line was not wanting to be described as a 'person with femaleness'.

I think the thing that really bothers me with all these well meaning idiots is this:
No matter what word is used, or phrase invented, it will eventually come to carry the same stigma. Any definition will be looked upon by a later group of people as derogatory some way or another.

What I don't want is this: When I get my diagnosis of whatever it is, I will use the term that makes sense to me (and as mentioned above, easier to say) and do not want anybody correcting me. That's already happening in other areas of speech in NYC with all the huge PC movement.
