I have Windows 7, and THAT barely runs some of my older software! I don't want Windows 10 - how do I keep it from coming to me?

Sigh. Change your updates to not automatically install. Ideally, to not install or download. Problem is you then have to manually check for updates and decide which ones to install. And chances are one of these days they'll slip Win10 into an otherwise innocent looking KB anyway...

See, Microsoft has discovered this new business model based on selling tracking data instead of operating systems. Even with the Edge browser set to private mode...turns out MS is still sending encrypted tracking data back home & you have no way of knowing what it is or how they are going to use it.

The Edge browser only serves one function since it doesn't support ad-blocking, and that is to download Google Chrome.

I HAVE NO COMPUTER SAVVY WHATSOEVER and I have no idea what to do except panic! I don't even know what a KB is, and I have no idea what I'm doing! I just want to keep Windows 7, I am disabled, and all of this is killing me! Somebody should make them stop bullying those of us who don't know what's going on, especially those of us living on extreme budgets! I'm panicking, and I'm desperate - my computer is my only window to the world!

If you are visual thinker this book may help.

Where I live the local library and senior/disability center has classes to help people learn to use their computers.

(By the way, my "sigh" was not aimed at the OP - it was aimed squarely at Microsoft & their forcing of this upgrade)

Would restoring a Windows 7 computer to its factory settings reverse any imposition of Windows 10 by Microsoft, or could they remove, disable or modify that option through one of their 'updates'?

I would imagine disabling updates would probably be the quickest for you considering the situation.

1st scenario: Windows 10 has not been installed yet.

I figured the least amount of steps would be good for you. Hopefully this helps if you have yet to resolve this issue.

1. click start button (the windows logo in the bottom left hand corner of the screen by default)

2. you will see a rectangular box where you can type in that box, by default, it says "Search programs and files" this is where you want to type services.msc

3. hit enter key

4. you will then see a window come up with all the services. you need to look for Windows Update. once you find it, do not just stop it. you want to disable it entirely. to do this, right click and go to properties and set to "disable" click apply and then click ok. *keep in mind that by doing so you will no longer be able to receive updates from MS unless you reverse the steps given here. Windows 10 should no longer bother you from that time forward. Unless, you reverse what you've done here.

Once more:

click start button, type services.msc, look for Windows Update service, right click it and go to properties and set to disable, click apply and then click ok.

2nd scenario: Worst case. Windows 10 is already there.

Backup any important files worth saving. Gather any and all installation media you have: Windows 7 installation dvd and other drivers and start over. If it's on a backup partition use that to restore Windows 7.

If you do reinstall windows make sure you disable windows updates through services prior to connecting to the internet. Otherwise, the problem will repeat.

Install GWX Control Panel, run it, and set your automatic updates so that it checks without automatically downloading and installing. Then, whenever it tells you you have updates available, download ONLY drivers and security updates, and hide the rest.

Disabling the Windows Update Service will also prevent security updates. I wouldn't even consider it an option.

No need to. You can uninstall Windows 10 again, if you accidentally install it.

The simplest answer is: You don't have to do anything.

If you read the article in BTDT's first reply, you'll see:
Quote:
To be clear, they aren’t automatically installing Windows 10, but they are downloading the entire installer, which is at least 3 GB, which takes up a lot of drive space, and also wastes your network bandwidth.
