This happens when I'm talking to a person, or group of people that I'm not that familiar with. I don't know if this is because I am anxious and I am trying to consciously control my eye contact.

Anyone else experience this?

It could be that you might not be blinking whilst all your effort is on eye contact?

I have! Every time I try to make eye contact I hear "don't look at Teri eyes! That's a no-no! >:(" in my head and I have to look away.

Exactly what you describe. I think it's the latter, since making eye contact requires a concious effort, must be a "tension" thing.

And the more you think about it the worst it gets. Something that helps me is to deviate your eyesight, not down, but to the side, while nodding slightly, like if you're thinking about what the other party is telling you, while at the same time aknowledge that you're still paying attention.

My eyes got very uncomfortable and I have a strong urge to look away after a period of time.

@ASPartOfMe it could very well be that.

@quelo thanks for the tip.
