Many people with ASD hate the heat. I'm the opposite where I can't stand the cold and am always layered even living in San Diego in the summer. Does anyone know why we are so sensitive to temperature extremes? I know many of you have experienced this, but why is it the case?

I can't stand the heat.

I don't even like it too much when it's in the 70s (low-mid 20's Celsius), with bright sunshine.

I liked it yesterday, in the 50's (13 Celsius). I wore a sweater over a shirt. Not much wind. Sublime.

I can wear no jacket when it's in the 50s (low to mid teens Celsius) with little wind.

The wind is the thing, sometimes even more than the temperature.

I am really annoyed by the air conditioner next to my computer because it makes me too cold, yet I rarely feel the need to wear a coat in the winter which doesn't make much sense. I am also quick to point out of a room is too hot, and I really hate being too hot.

I think this happens for the same reason that we generally can't stand loud sounds and brightly lit rooms. Good old sensory procesing probelems.

I don't like extremes unless I'm.
A. In a hot tub
B. Using ice on my back 8)

I'm more sensitive to cold compare to everyone around me. (I live near the equator) I could even shiver around less than 30 C if I didn't wear something thick enough.
Which the norm here craves colder than that. (their 'ideal' cold is around 20 C or less) I don't last long with an air conditioned room, and I'm the reason why my house doesn't have one.

From the room temperature, to what I eat or drink-- I never drink any beverages with ice. Yet there's a perk in this when dealing with heat.

Yet I'm less sensitive or more resistant to warmer temperatures. Walking around 40 C with layers of clothing on a whole afternoon without rest isn't a problem to me.

.. And I'm not always like this. I used to crave both extreme sides of temperature.

The main reason I hate being hot is because of sweating, and I absolutely hate it when my clothing or bedding is even the slightest bit wet. When I'm in water though I quite like the heat, so I love warm showers and hot tubs.

Yup, i prefer cooler weather, i love the summer though, but my room gets a little too warm for my liking, have always liked a colder room, also when with a partner, as much as i like to cuddle up i find it hard when trying to get to sleep, i feel the extra body heat makes me too hot! So Love the sun but prefer Cool air conditions, a slight paradox, but hey! lol

I overheat easily, so I tend to like colder weather and have the air on at all times in the summer.

The heat of summer bothers me the most. Mainly the humidity. Makes me so lethargic. I like winter when all bundled in fleece. And also being under heavy blankets. So l like heat better when it is being generated by me.

I suffer from the dry air in winter. I need high humidity. I have other health conditions that make my body over-responsive to temperature variations, so I can't judge whether or not I'd be sensitive otherwise. As a kid I'd get hot easily, though. High metabolism, maybe?

I understand that many of you experience this as I do, but I'm curious if any of you know the reasons as to why from a biological, scientific standpoint? What is it about how people with autism are that make us sensitive to heat and cold more so than others?

It's almost definitely because of the sensory issues we tend to have. We also tend to be more sensitive to light and sound which is why I prefer to be in a quiet and dimly lit room. One common trait of autism according to the Internet is a heightened sensitivity to changes in air pressure, humidity, and temperature. It could be that the sensory information coming in is just a bit too much and that stresses us out, although that's probably not the main reason.

The biggest factor for me at least is that we also tend to hate certain textures. As I mentioned before, the main reason I hate the heat is because it makes me sweat and I hate the feeling of my clothing being even a little bit wet.

Either way the cause is the same, we have problems with sensory processing. There are no solid proven explenations as to why this happens to us, but there is a theory called intense world theory which says that a bunch of biochemical nonsense makes us form stronger connections between neuron microcircuits which causes us to perceive everything as being brighter, louder, and overall more intense. It has also been found that people with autism have weaker connections between the different parts of the brain, and that probably contributes to the problem as well.

I live in a very hot place. Right now it's 30ºC (around 86ºF). It's not very fun. I'm constantly around fans and air conditioners, even hating them. I'd like to live somewhere cooler in the future.

I get overheated really easily. I rarely wear long sleeves and am always in short sleeves, no matter what time of year it is. In the summer, I keep my room very cold with the AC turned all the way up.

I hate the cold. Not just hate, but I cannot stand the cold. The cold and I are not friends and I refuse to go anywhere if it's snowing or cold.

You can put me in 4 layers, with 24 F degree weather and I'd still be cold. Cold is no.

But I also hate extremes on certain body parts.

I hate heat and cold on my face. And I hate heat on my feet.

I live in North Dakota so I rarely have to fight extreme heat. I do, however, have to fight extreme cold, and that doesn't really bother me. In the past, when I have been exposed to the heat it has bothered me a lot!
