Looking for others who have taken the 23&Me genetic test, or want to, to discuss information found therein. For those unfamiliar, 23&Me is a large, ancestry and health gene testing service who test your DNA from a self-administered home saliva test. Then your results are posted online and you log in to see them.

The results include charts and graphs describing your ancestry, mitochondrial DNA group, reports on various health issues, your Neanderthal gene percentage, and a way of connecting with others who have a similar genetic profile to you and are therefore, probably, a relative of yours. It costs $99.

They also give you access to the raw data of your genome in an easily searchable database. This seems truly amazing to me. I am curious about what we can discover about our own personalities, autism, and other charecteristics using this data. I have found some apparent anomilies in my own DNA so far. Anyone else interested in this?

I'm very interested, and want to do this badly as my family has a generic European heritage, but with some startling differences in appearance. Many of them are the very Scandinavian stereotyped blonde hair with blue/green eyes, fair translucent skin. Then the other half of them have dark hair, and DARK skin, so much so that my sisters (one of each type of coloring) caused my mom to be asked if they had different fathers (they don't. She is Polish, and my father's side has the varying appearance). I'm curious if our Spanish heritage actually is a different ancestry than we were told. Possibly Egyptian or something else from that Northern side of Africa.
I didn't know they did health markers and whatnot. That makes me much more curious.

I would caution you to check Groupon though, they frequently have this for $70 or so on sale.

I got tested several years ago. Then I researched a pile of autism SNPs and looked myself up on them. Turns out I've got a lot of autism-related genes.

Just remember that Insurance Companies buy the genetic data and use it to deny coverage or raise your insurance rates.

Employers can also buy the data and use it to not hire you or to fire you if they see a genetic risk to your health that will raise their insurance costs.

Once this data is created it is out there forever.
