Hi. When I try to make a simple ponytail I always get lumps. Does anybody here have a solution?

I can't make a ponytail either. I have trouble even using one of those big hair clips. It's a fine motor thing, I think.

Be sure your hair is thoroughly brushed or combed before you try to ponytail it, and use a larger diameter ponytail holder, which you may have to double after you first get it on, but that is easier than too small a band.

I have that problem too. Everyone does.

My cousin's wife taught me this, and gave me the secret. The secret is product.

Either dampen the hair with leave-in conditioner, or dampen it with a light-hold mousse or styling gel. Then brush it into a ponytail with a styling brush-- that's one that has plastic bristles that are fine and close together. That's how all those bright and beautiful NT chicks get those sleek ponytails.

Or go with a loose one, and embrace the bumps. That's my method. Because I have better things to do with my time, unless I'm going to An Event, than perfect my hairdo.

Thank you. I have never thought about this before, maybe it is.

Thank you. I'm going to try that. I still wonder how it seems so easy when others do it, It seems like they just gather up their hair and tie it without giving much thought about it.

Thank you. In my case, I guess I maybe have to use products to make it look nice. It just seems so easy for others to do it that I wondered if there was a way, but as you say, there are better things to do than to stress about ponytails, except for events. Maybe I'm thinking to much about it.

I have a lot of trouble styling my hair as it's curly. I always have lumps in my ponytails unless I comb it back wet.

Hold the hair in one hand then brush it smoothly in the other and slip on a tie. My grandmother is brilliant at this, no products needed.

I... well, I simply cut it to a length were it wouldn't need to be tied.

Sorta what I do. I have greasy hair so I wash every day and it's curly. (It probably dosn't look greasy to other people but bugs me)

What I Do:

I don't completely dry it after washing then brush and put in pony tail wet. Then I put hair wax on to stop bits sticking up, a mat wax that dries natural :) (about 5 mins). When the wax & hair is dry (about an hour) I run my nails over it to break up the hair and make it look as if no product is on it. It usually stays flat on top then and goes curly in the tail.

EDIT: *** sorry didn't realise was in women's section ***

I have very fine hair and always felt self conscious about my lack of ability to make smooth ponies.

Eventually after a lot of practice, I realized I needed to pull the pony really tight when fastening it.
I was always getting lumps when I pulled below the band because it felt too loose.
And it's easier to loosen the band without getting lumps by tugging it out a bit while holding the very base.

Also, it helps me if the last brush stroke before I band it is the bottom - not the top, probably because then I already had to shift my grip and if I can do that without getting lumps, the stars have aligned and I'll probably get a smooth 'do.

However I suspect hair texture has a lot to do with what technique works best.

I have the problem too. My hair is thick and heavy and I found these combs on Amazon called I think "Kool Kombs" or similar to that (there's different kinds) and it holds my hair up in one. They have beads on them that are decorative and hold the ponytail in place.

Off-topic: I think most males look awesome in pony tails and/or buns!! ! And ZD I'd think male pony tails have all the same problems as female ones.

On-topic: My method involves bending over and brushing my hair while hanging it upside down. It's much easier when wet as well. This tends to put the ponytail up high where I usually like it to be.

Making a ponytail had to be learned for me. It is still a struggle/hassle. I have a very sensitive head so that may have something to do with not going all out with my hair style. I know that I should know more variety in what I can do with my hair but meh...

Being that I was never interested in fashion never helped. I want to look decent, but my looks aren't an obsession with me the majority of the time. I can do my hair up in a clip but doing a ponytail, I always get something wrong. Looking in the mirror, I'm not always aware of the extent of the messiness unless someone else tells me.
