Self explanatory, are there any metal fans here? Personally my favorite subgenres are symphonic metal and black metal but I've had more melodic death metal on my playlist recently as well.

Yep :) A few of my favourite metal bands are Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Manowar and Megadeth. In terms of symphonic I like Nightwish, Within Temptation and Epica.

I'm glad someone asked this. I remember when I was in high school and an introverted loner my escape was always extreme underground music. I never fit the computer geek math genius Aspergers profile. I escaped into my own world with headphones on and still listen exclusively to metal. While I like a lot of bands, my favorite is melodic death metal. At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Omnium Gatherum, Insomnium, Mors Principium Est, Be'lakor, Scar Symmetry, Solution .45 is what I listen to frequently these days. Especially Solution .45's new album Nightmares in the Waking State and Omnium Gatherum's new album Grey Heaven, two of the best albums I've ever heard in the genre. Also, the new Killswitch Engage album is awesome, though they fall in the "metalcore" category. I still remember going out to the record store to get their self titled classic back in 1999-2000.

I love instrumental metal without human voice, which is my favorite kind of music, because they make my blood boiling.

I recommend System of a Down(Self-Titled and Steal This Album) and Killswitch Engage(Alive or Just Breathing and Disarm the Descent). Those two are pretty good. Might like them, if you have never listened to them.

Oh definitely System of a Down is great loved "Lost in Hollywood","B.Y.O.B" (not really caring it was a mainstream hit. That song was fun even if the meaning was different.)and Question. From the "Mesmerise" album. From the "Steal This Album!" album mine was "Innervision","Bubbles","F--k the System" and "A.D.D." and "Boom". But the first two albums were the ones with this hit that transitioned from Spice Girls (Don't ask, not too happy about that.) were the hits that were played. But my real transition into another genre was grunge bands. But any way.

Killswitch Engage was good until 2004. My thing was yeah I kind of did like a song or two. From thier "The End of Heartache" and "As Daylight Dies" got a bit emo sounding for me. But I loved thier music video for Dio's Holy Diver. I wonder if they went back into the metal again, cause I did hear that the original lead singer left due to diabetes. Not sure though.

Does anyone know if the replacement singer is better?

The new singer is good. Disarm the Descent is really their comeback from the crap after Alive or Just Breathing.

End of Heartache was just too, how do I put this, un-Killswitch-y.

Alive or Just Breathing and Disarm the Descent are what I listen to when I listen to Killswitch.

On a side note, System of a Down has always been good, but their best will always be (in my opinion) their self titled album.

Here is another recommendation: Slipknot, like the first album, not the newer stuff.I really like Slipknot, oh, and I also recommend Tool, but you have probably already listened to them, if I were to guess.

Yes Slipknot is awesome. I remember having the Iowa album and "People=S--t" was my introduction to Slipknot. I do like Psychosocial and Vermillion. Vermillion was the first music video I saw from something about the creepiness was rather well executed in my opinion.

Yup, been into metal for 15+ years. Started out when a friend of mine brought over his Stratovarius, Iron Maiden, and Metallica albums. This was in the golden age of p2p network sharing (KazAA, Soulseek, AudioGalaxy, etc.) and I branched out and discovered so many new bands very quickly (Iced Earth, Children of Bodom, Blind Guardian, Cannibal Corpse, Dismember, Candlemass, Nightwish...it just kept growing).

I'd never heard anything like metal music before and it was as if the genre was just waiting for me. The melodies, the heaviness, the epicness...it just all hit me like a ton of bricks.

Don't really have a sub genre that I prefer over all, but I tend to lean towards traditional, doom, power, certain derivatives of death metal.

Anyone else here use Last.fm? If you do, feel free to add me: http://www.last.fm/user/stickyshooZ
