I was eight.

Before, I read by rote when I was six and seven but if you gave me a book to read I never read before, I wouldn't be able to read it. If you gave me a non chapter book when I was eight I have never read before I be able to read it. I learned pretty quick after my mother started to make me read everyday.

I think I learned to read before I went to school when I was five, but I'm not certain.

I cannot recall not being able to read.

'wonder if mom shoved books up there whilst I was still inside?

Best I can remember first grade that would have made me 6-7 I guess. Oh for some
strange reason I was elected class president in first grade. Even though I was
painfully shy. I have some memory of being some what a clown. Anyway by second grade that popularity was over.

I actively resisted being *taught* to read, as I resisted being taught most things when I was very young. I was extraordinarily stubborn, had my own idea about the right way to learn everything, and refused to let anyone else modify my approach.

I basically ended up teaching myself when I was 5.

I guess 5-6 years old (I started 1st grade a bit early due to my birthday & school district). I took to it right away - I remember I loved to be read to before that. I doubt that my parents (we're talking early 1960s) even thought about trying to teach me earlier, so don't know if I'd have been able to or not.

I was both reading and writing before I started at any school apparently.

I was apparently very, very young (under age 2). I don't remember it.

My son was 8 too. He made little progress in KG / Gr. 1. Finally, they put him into reading recovery. he did really great, and learned to read a set of readers, right up to end Gr. 1. Then I pulled him out of school, and believing in the books so much, bought the first set of Gr. 2 readers for $150.00.
He read them flawlessly. So, I take out a copy of "cat in the hat". And he can't read a single word! 8O

He must have memorized the "format" or something. We worked very intensively with reading for a couple years.

It has been nearly 5 years, he still struggles with reading, and cant spell past a mid Gr. 2 level!
