well, I needed a server, and I had a computer, but no OS, and I looked around, found the ports system, and am now VERY happy, I'm definitly still learning, and would definitly like any reccomendations anyone can make regarding texts or reference works for a beginners beginner <I can't even figure out how to open most files/apps that I have installed>

right now I'm not using xwindows, but I have xorg installed with no bells or whistles

I've never used any of the BSDs... I'm a Linux man. If you're making a server I definitely recommend Ubuntu Linux. Great support available.

I've installed a server with FreeBSD, which means no X, but if you have any specific questions, ask me in this thread and I'll see what I can do to help you.
