1.
The entire Sonic series from start to finish.
You could go ahead with Sonic Mega Collection plus and / or Sonic Gems Collection.

2.
Minecraft

3. [addition because Kuraudo777 reminded me]
Pokemon. Diamond and Pearl were IMO the last to stick to all the Pokemon games before it. This is noted in its OST and game play. The newer ones aren't bad, they just seem so different, not in a progressive way.

4.
A single game of his / her choice.

4.5
Not a "Video" game, but one that is often very enjoyable... He or She will also require Legos... lots of them.

Pokemon! X, Pearl, Omega Ruby, and Explorers of Sky are my favourites. Oh, and Dragon Quest IX is quite fun. It was my first JRPG! :) Oh, and Super Scribblenauts/Scribblenauts Unlimited is loads of fun.

When I was ten, we just played lots of SNES and NES, and maybe some Genesis.

Looks like Mortal Kombat II wasn't out until the end of that year, so we didn't really have any violent games yet =)

When it goes to video games for kids, I prefer Club Penguin. We have recently got it for our PC and found some nice walkthroughs on the website here. My son enjoys this game a lot, and I like it as well. I guess, you will like it too

If he's interested in animals, he might be able to have a lot of fun with Impossible Creatures (especially with the Tellurian mod).
