The nice charming guy in the office next door decided to bring his toddler in. Said toddler has been screaming her head off and distracting me from my work and also disturbing clients who I have been on the 'phone to.

Am i unusual in being extremely upset by this and wanting to go home?

I have no strategy for dealing with this, any help would be much appreciated.

It's not unusual, but you'll have to deal. He wouldn't have brought her in if he had anywhere else to bring her; it's temporary. Cope by finding another space for talking to clients.

Without knowing more details...

1. You are correct to be upset by this. It is generally NOT acceptable.

2. That said, how you should respond depends on specifics I don't know. Most times something similar has happened to me, the parent takes steps to admonish the child to behave or the kid just knows better. Hopefully there's a more "insulated" room the kid can sit in where they can amuse themselves without being too distracting.

Yeah thats pretty unusual and it's perfectly normal for you to be bothered by it. However, I'm sure there was absolutely no place else the kid could have gone and I bet the parent wants him somewhere else just as bad as you do. I'd try to be as understanding as possible considering that this is the first time it's happened and just accept that the day is going to suck and get through it the best you can without adding to the parents stress.
