Hi,

I'm still figuring it out, but at this stage I'm pretty sure I'm an AMAB trans girl. I've been thinking about names, and I really like the name Rachel. I have some other ideas, but what do you guys think of Rachel? My birth name is Jack, and I'm happy to have close friends and family call me that, but it feels like it'd be nice to have a more feminine name as well. If I can work up the courage to ever tell anyone and start transitioning, that is.

Kind regards,
Rachel/Jack

It's a nice feminine name. What made you think of this one specifically? I'm always interested in the reasons why transfolk chose the names they did. Plus the differences - some people chose names close to their birth names to make it easier (like Jacqui / Jackie would be a feminization of your name) others, completely different. Some people change their last names, some don't. Some people allow relatives and others who knew them before transition to continue to call them by their birth names, some can't stand it. It's always interesting the reasoning behind naming.
This was one of the first things I did in transition was legally change my name, as I felt it to be important. Put way too much thought into it and I still think it's the perfect name for me, even if I do have to spell it a lot.
I do still prefer relatives to use my birth name even after physical / medical transition.
Do you intend to legally change it one day, and just keep Jack as a kind of nickname, or keep Jack legally and just interchange with Rachel (or whatever you decide)?

Hello again,

I'm glad to hear you guys think it's a good name. I basically got it from characters in a couple of books I read, Hyperion by Dan Simmons and Deception Point by Dan Brown. Those characters never were that special for me, but I really liked the name for some reason. Now that I'm experimenting more with gender identity, I figure that's the one I'll go with. I've already asked one of my friends to call me Rachel when there's no one else around. Hopefully one day I'll hear it all the time. I honestly don't know if I'll legally change it or anything. I guess we'll just see how it goes.

Best wishes,
Rachel

Rachel is a beautiful name, but there are other names that sound just as lovely as Rachel.
