The Pleasure Seekers consisting Of Suzi Quatro and sisters were a '60's garage rock band who released a proto Goth song Mr. Right

I listen to a bit of it. It's a genre I should really explore more. Does Joy Division count?

Allmusic - Goth Rock
Quote:
The godfathers of goth-rock were British post-punkers Joy Division, whose bleak, remote, obsessively introspective music and lyrics laid the initial foundation for goth.

ok they're more classed as being neofolk but I recommend death in june, as they have somewhat of a gothic sound.
Joy division is of post punk but some class it as being goth music . I forgot to mention other bands such as mortal love, paradise lost, katatonia, anathema and opeth and trees of eternity which are doom, post punk and heavy, some again consider it being goth.

People would be surprised at how much music I listen to, but occasionally I'll be on Spotify enjoying some darker vibes. Something about goth tunes give you a fearless edge when you hear them.
Here are some, including industrial - not exactly goth but close enough:

The Birthday Massacre
Imperative Reaction
I:Scintilla
Assemblage 23
Mind.In.a.box (is that how it's labeled?)
KMFDM
NIN
Zeromancer

yes so that's some of them. I'm not sure if any of you are more like the type to listen to both goth and industrial, considering they tend to merge into one genre at times. But anyhow yes, goth can be cool. Here's a remix track I liked for awhile that I still do...

The Birthday Massacre is my all time favorite band. I don't listen to a lot of dark music but I love TBM.

Yes I do, as well as post punk, as they sound pretty similar.

Most early goth music is post-punk, but there are also a lot of bands with "gothic" lyrics that aren't at all post-punk in their music style. I'd still consider them "goth" in a way. Especially if they consider themselves part of the "goth" scene.

what are examples of the ones that don't sound at all like post punk that would still be considered goth? I know there is stuff a bit heavier than the post punk and also there is goth metal, but that is different than goth music, and not really tied to goth subculture.

Voltaire is considered to be tied to goth subculture, yet he doesn't play goth music. He plays cabaret rock/pop/folk. I guess there should be a distinction between goth subculture and goth music.
