Hi folks,

Just curious if anyone else here encounters triggers in music. To be specific, what is your instant emotional or thought response to hearing a particular note, chord or lyric. I dont necessarily mean a full meltdown, im just curious to see if anyone had what could be considered an extreme response, for me personally it is uncontrollable crying, or a trigger into a spiral of despair.

Yes, music can have, both, emotional and physical effects on me. Lyrics do not, however. I can be moved by particular runs, chord combinations, vocal sounds/tonality, the cello, piano, and a few combinations of certain instruments. I can be moved to tears. I can experience euphoria, and become deeply entranced by various sounds. I experience autonomous sensory meridian response, and I experience a specific type of musical synesthesia.

I attach memories and pictures to just about all the music I really like. Often this association is people or good or bad times I've had in my life. I guess sort of like a soundtrack/musical of my life. Certain songs and albums will define certain transitions in my life. When one of these songs or albums triggers this memory or thought I can start to cry uncontrollably. I've had this happen to me lot at work lately, where certain songs will make me stream tears right in the office 2-3 times a day... pretty embarrassing.
