to me it's just short for "merry Christmas and happy New Year".

I think it's something to do with those SJW religious people thinking it's not religious enough eventhough it is.

In my experience, it's usually right-wing Christians who complain about it. See also the "war on Christmas" which is usually overblown.

I only complain about it because it's yet another Americanism creeping into British English.

My SIL put it on FB that every time somebody said Happy Holidays to her, she was going to say, "You mean Merry Christmas, don't you?" I think she thought she'd lost Merry Christmas to be politically correct and she wanted to reclaim it. Her many friends agreed, with enthusiasm. So I reminded her I live in a Jewish neighbourhood and would she say that to a guy wearing a yamalke? She was horrified; "Of course not!"

So we talked it around and decided it was up to Christians to wear some sign, a corsage, a pin, or a Santa, or earrings or maybe a candy-cane - then we could give and get Merry Christmas.

The objection isn't generally to saying "Happy Holidays"; it's to being told you shouldn't say "Merry Christmas." Leftists are always trying to enforce speech codes on other people, and understandably, most people don't like that.

You see stories like this one from Italy all the time:

Schoolchildren BANNED from singing Silent Night over fears it will OFFEND other religions

SCHOOLCHILDREN were banned from singing a popular Christmas carol and told to hum the tune instead, over fears the performance could offend other religions.

Children in Flero, Italy, did not sing the lyrics of Holy Night.

Instead pupils hummed the carol during a concert dubbed the “Winter Recital” in Bresciano, northern Italy.

The decision was criticised by a local councillor.

We would like to have ‘Christmas Concerts’ and not ‘Winter Recitals’ where children can feel free to sing Holy Night, Elena Franceschini, the culture commissioner for the town of Bresciano, said: "Even if the state and the school claim to be secular, we would like to have ‘Christmas Concerts’ and not ‘Winter Recitals’ where children can feel free to sing Holy Night without thinking that this offends or excludes pupils who belong to other cultures or other religions or who declare to be atheists.”

It is not the first time children in Italy have been censored over Christmas.

Last week Express.co.uk reported schoolchildren in an Italian town had been banned from mentioning Jesus in Christmas songs.

Youngsters preparing for their school production in Pontevico were given lyric sheets with Jesus' name removed from popular tunes.

Defending the bizarre decision, headteacher Paola Bellini said: "Children will sing songs that evoke universal themes of peace and solidarity."

It comes days after a school in Sweden removed references to Christianity from a popular Christmas carol to avoid offending others.

The school in Amal cut lines from 'Now Light 1,000 Christmas Lights' which make references to Jesus and God.

A line about "a star over Bethlehem" was edited – and replaced with the phrase "the star over all of us".

That happens here in Australia as well we're always told we have to be "inclusive" the new buzz word from the loony left.
all it does is anger people who are sick of being told what to say and think.

are we going to need to ban "happy Halloween" because people who don't celebrate Halloween will get offended by it?

Halloween's been banned from schools here for years. No pumpkin-drawing in class.

They see other holidays as a threat to their privilege?

No, they see Halloween as heathen to their religion. But it was done in a very community sort of way. We all studied the history of Halloween and it is indeed Christian. And how would I like to send my kid to public school to be taught things that are heathen to us? So we took Halloween out of the schools. It's still the same in the homes and on the streets, trick or treat, etc. Just no pumpkins on blackboards.

I mean that they see Kwanzaa, Chanukah, Bodhi Day, etc. as threats to their privilege. By ensuring that "Merry Christmas" is the most normal December greeting, they protect themselves from losing their privilege.

Oh! But there is no privilege attaching to one religion or another. That's one of the great Freedoms, isn't it?

Bases on what my boyfriend, Catholic, says it's because the holiday is Christmas. So stop taking Christ out if Christmas. To which I tell him... Not everyone is celebrating Christmas you bafoon. Say whatever you want just don't get offended if someone responds to your merry Christmas with happy Hanukkah. Live and let live.

Also, Christmas and new year's are separate holidays. So.... Screw new year's?

I was told working in retail that we were supposed to say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas unless the customer said Christmas 1st.

Because they themselves are in the grips of identity politics. Conservative-christian identity politics. They believe in a conspiracy theory that society is out to get them.
