Same here, mostly depending on the subject. I used to be the language teachers' favourite, as languages are my "special interest" and I did very well in that and certain other areas without even making an effort. (I'm not sure if they liked me as a person, though.)
Then there were subjects I was pretty weak in although I really tried.
Because of this discrepancy in performance, some teachers must have thought that I am just lazy, and a few of them even seemed to take it personally. One of them threatened to throw me out the closed door

if he ever caught me unprepared again. (In fact, I was overly prepared, as usual, but I didn't show any sign of life when being pressured or screamed at.)
And that was just one of many miserable anecdotes collected over 13 years of German school education.
