Is it true that ethnic groups such as black people should have a lower bmi compared to white people?

I have read that Asian people should have lower BMI than white people due to increased risks of certain health conditions.

"should have"? in what way?

But no, this is a great pile of manure, not in the least becouse the BMI scale itself isn't all it's cracked up to be

An ideal "BMI" varies from person to person, individually.

Define "ethnic" in the first place.

Because people of Asian descent tend to develop illnesses associated with obesity at a lower bmi versus caucasian/black/etc. people, the bmi scale for them is changed. Otherwise it's still accurate for everyone else, unless you're a bodybuilder.

I'm sure there are going to be a few studies that show racial prejudice for BMI related illnesses but they must be taken with a grain of salt. BMI is nowhere near a perfect system and has been pushed well beyond what it was originally designed to be. The biggest concerns are still based on ethnic background, family history and weight considerations but they are measured separately.

it usually means "not white" in these contexts, which is a pretty dumb usage of the term really - it sort of "normalizes" whites and diminishes the fact that there are many ethnicities within what is usually called "white".

but i don't mean to turn this into race thread #28478373.

BMI is a very rough and inaccurate indicator and it doesn't really tell you
much. the simple height+weight calculation doesn't take into account important factors such as muscle mass, percentage of fat, lifestyle, etc.

every person has a different ideal BMI.

Not black people, Asians. Asians have a more petite build so that means a weight that would be normal for someone else could be overweight for an Asian (of the same height).

I knew an Asian who weighed 47 KG and was still kind of chubby with lots of subcutaneous fat (even though for non-Asians 47 KG is very thin).

See article linked below.

Not 100% sure but I think it's not race related as much as culture/place related.

Western countries are usually of white people tend to have higher BMI for obvious reasons, whether they are black or white, for examples black people in America have been there for centuries.

Africans have lower BMI due to different diet and culture. African population is mostly black.

Hence why there could be a misconception.
