What songs do you listen to when life is giving you a full serving of crap with all the trimmings?
I personally like The Last in Line and We Rock by Dio, but sometimes Comfortably Numb gets
me through those bleak moments.

What about you guys?

Oh my, where to start? Elliott Smith for when I'm feeling sad and NIN for when I'm pissed at worldly oppression and deceit.

For an actual pick me up "Baby Britain" by Smith is good. So is "Angel in the Snow" and "Division Day". Most of his stuff is pretty dark. Hell, to say his sound is alot like The Beatles gone dark wouldn't be off base. But, strangely, I feel better when I listen to his music. Now Jazz and Frank Sinatra put me in the pits though. :P

Ok, so I'm gonna go all music nerd now...

I usually try to find music that matches my mood, in order to express it and thereby resolve it. I find that Beethoven is a genius for the deep down hurt, the quiet aching kind. Cliche, but Moonlight Sonata is fantasic. Movement I is sad...Movement III is angry. For full on despair, mvmt II of Symphony No. 7.

When I feel angry or betrayed, Shostokovich's The Execution of Stepan Razin. Nothing like an unjust beheading and a fat tzar to bring out the noble Russian proletariat in you.

If I need an actual pick-me-up, I listen to Torke's Javelin. Minimalist, very bright. Or Holst, the Planets, Jupiter. One can't help but smile.

Right now, my favorite for the full emotional ride is Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6, the Pathetique. We performed it last night, and the last movement was so powerful, the applause at the end seemed innappropriate, out of place.

ok, I'm done^.^

NZ band Stawpeople did a cover of The Cars "Drive" with a female singer that I always liked. Sad and beautiful.

Listening to the Eagles right now "in a New York minute" ... feels soothing. (don't really know what the song's about)

Or ... "I don't wanna talk ..." Abba's Winner Takes It All

Disco! No, really. Disco.

After some careful searching (not really careful) I found this neat site, that has categories for all kinds of music.
http://www.popculturemadness.com/Music/

There's a list for Disco. And for "Feel Good Songs"

Lots of categories to make you laugh just from the titles and remembering some of the songs, like "Crazy Songs" has "They're Coming to Take Me Away" and "Maniac".

Or the Politically Incorrect category. That looks to be funny.

I don't know if you have an iPod (I don't), but you could maybe make a group of songs that makes you laugh and dance for the bad times.

That site could be a fun one to use at a party, for setting up the music to match a theme. I kind of liked the crusing music that has a little bit of everything in it.

Aw, I gotta get a cassette player. I have a ton of cassettes and haven't listened to them for years. I have CDs and records. I've never had my own record player either. I just saw tons of songs I have on cassette, and now I want to listen to them. Hah!

No one can be angry about life quite like the late Warren Zevon. Songs like "Hasten down the Wind" or "No One's in Love This Year" are perfect for making you not feel so bad about your own lack of romance. And "Excitable Boy", "Jungle Work", and "Mr. Bad Example" are great for just being angry in general.

To cheer up, listen to Bob Marley. It's hard to be anything but upbeat to "Three Little Birds."

I've discovered a song labeled Drowning by an unknown band I just found through WinMX. It's probably one of the most angry songs I've ever heard in my life.

Oh, Reggae, that's good, I have some Bob Marley collection. Neuromancer reminded me of Bossa Nova. I have some collection of music from the Smithsonian like "The History of Jazz". I like those kinds of collections so I can get an overall smattering of a style of music. I have a ton of Classical albums that were being ditched by my neighbor, I just need a record player. I only have some Beethovan and Bach and a few things in the Classical selections.

I try to stay away from angry music.

Hey! How about some Cheap Trick?

Whooo.
Just found a new song to get all positive again:

New Found Power by Damageplan:

Quote:
3. New Found Power

WHY HAVE WE WAITED SO LONG
SUPPRESSING THE POWER INSIDE
TEAR AWAY ALL THAT WAS WRONG
SOMETHING TOO MASSIVE TO HIDE

IT'S TIME TO RIP THE CHAIN FROM YOUR NECK
LET GO THE PAST AS YOU PURGE
FREE NOW FROM EVERYTHING WEIGHING YOU DOWN
OPEN THE FLOODGATES AND SURGE

NEW FOUND POWER
NEW FOUND POWER
NEW FOUND POWER
NEW FOUND POWER~

CLEANSING YOURSELF OF THE PAST
LEARN FROM MISTAKES AND MOVE ON
CONQUERING NEW GROUND AT LAST
UNITE AND BECOME TWICE AS STRONG

IT'S TIME TO RIP THE CHAIN FROM YOUR NECK
LET GO THE PAST AS YOU PURGE
FREE NOW FROM EVERYTHING WEIGHING YOU DOWN
OPEN THE FLOODGATES AND SURGE

NEW FOUND POWER
NEW FOUND POWER
NEW FOUND POWER
NEW FOUND POWER~

NOTHING VENTURED, NOTHING GAINED
HOPE WAS ALL THAT KEPT ME SANE
RISE ABOVE AND PROVE MYSELF
I'LL SURVIVE WITHOUT YOUR HELP
SHUT YOU OUT, MY STRENGTH COMES FROM WITHIN~

Pantera, Manowar and Judas priest are pretty catchy heavy metal bands that get your testosterone pumping, works for us men at least. You just have to love Manowar's simple lyrics too.. "They can't stop us, let them try - for heavy metal we will die"
