Eating at a table for one always made me feel more isolated than any other public activity. Has this problem faded away with so many people glued to their 'phones now? It is over a decade since I quit going.

Yes.

Never have , never will.

I'll never understand how people can even go into a pub and drink alone, I used to hate getting to pub first when meeting someone.

Sometimes, I like to go to a restaurant or fast food place to read a paper or something.

Sometimes, it's lonely, though.

There's a question on one of the Aspie quizzes regarding this - I think it asks if you'd prefer to dine alone at a restaurant or with someone.

Do you know which one is the Aspie answer and why?

The "Aspie" answer would be "alone," I believe. How do you, personally, feel? Would you rather eat alone at a restaurant, or converse with somebody?

Frequently, Aspies like to be involved with their "special interests." Sometimes, they like to read at restaurants (justlike they like to read at libraries) without somebody else bothering them.

Additionally, Aspies sometimes have difficulty within social occasions such as that found with multiple people sitting at a table at a restaurant. They have difficulty, say, in "filtering out" conversations which have nothing to do with the conversation which they are pursuing at the moment.

I, myself, have difficulty talking to more than one person at a restaurant table.

That's one of the annoying things about those tests - the subjectiveness.

My answer to your question is 'converse with somebody' rather than dine alone.

But like you I have difficulty talking to more than one person at a restaurant table.

It goes to show: "If you've met one Aspie, you've met one Aspie."

It really depends on my mood. Sometimes, I like to dine alone, take in the decor (of a decent restaurant), listen to the music (if it's provided, and it's not loud), or read a book/newspaper (though not in a "fancy" restaurant because they are usually dark).

I can't say I have ever gone to a pub or a restaurant on my own, but I do enjoy conducting research for jobs I am applying for in coffee shops, such as Costa and Starbucks. Even though it has happened on a few occasions, watching a movie in a cinema is quite an embarrassing solitary activity.

I've never been to a restaurant alone before, and I wouldn't like to either. Many people do go to restaurants alone but for some reason I wouldn't feel right going to eat out alone.

The only 'restaurants' I ever go to are McDonald's and Subway, and there's no stigma attached to dining alone in those places. Another plus is not having to deal with waiters.

If I'm in a restaurant in a group, I'm usually the first person to finish my food. People tell me I eat fast, but I think it probably has more to do with the fact that I'm less involved in the conversation than most other people at the table, so I have more time to eat.

Do other people find they finish their food first at the table as well?

I actually like it. I go to eat food I enjoy which someone skilled has cooked. I often take my journal with me to do a catch up or thinking aloud session.

No. I don't have great teeth, and have always chewed thoroughly anyway. My family always had to wait for me to finish before they could get dessert. Now, I take small portions if I can, and eat later.

I'd rather go with someone, especially to gastronomic restaurants. I like to discuss amazing dishes. If I'm just eating to take on nutrients, I mostly don't care. Around LA, lots of people ate alone, but everyone seems to eat in groups 1000 miles to the north. It could just be that my perceptions have changed from living with other people again.

It depends on the restaurant.

I go to movies (cinema) alone on a regular basis.
