Is Soy Milk really good? I used to be a vegetarian, I tried being a vegan, I ate tofu once, I threw up on my computer keyboard. I hear Soy Milk has artificial sweeteners.

You can get sweetened and unsweetened varieties of soya, almond, and other non-actual milks. I prefer oat and rice milks.

I have heard that soya milk (naturally) contains a chemical compound that disrupts your endocrine and thyroid systems; large quantities, such as several glasses daily, can affect your weight, mood, and your chances of breast cancer (even in men) and chances of conception (especially for men). I've not read the studies, but I'd take it in the same way as all internet-based advice.

For the others, they vary in nutritional value, and rice milk especially contains high levels of sugar.

I once heard Milhouse tell Bart on the Simpsons that he had to drink soy milk because real milk could kill him.

IMO that's about the only good reason to drink soy milk. That, or having an intolerance or allergy that just makes you *feel* like you're going to die. :P

I had no idea until recently that there were all these alternative 'milks' like soy, rice, almond etc. Just the other day I noticed Hemp Milk for sale in Sainsbury's - that sounds really disgusting....

Well, too much of anything is bad.

I think the said chemical compound is an estrogen. I haven't read the studies, but I've studied it in a textbook. It was supposed to be a defense mechanism to limit predators eating the plant.

My family has been drinking soy milk for a long time, and we're fine. I think if you have no allergy/intolerance/etc, you should be fine if you don't drink too much.

I drink soy milk because real milk does bad things to my digestive system. It's bad enough I feel like a grenade went off on my keister after handling my evacuatory business without milk to make things worse.

Okay, I have made the switch to roasted almonds milk. It is more expensive but contains more protein. The reason for making the switch is that I eat about four times a week tofu, which is made from soy, with my dinner.

To help other vegans or people who think about becoming vegan, here is my protein sources list:
- Almond milk for breakfast and lunch;
- tofu (for dinner);
- pea protein powder;
- nuts (eg cashew for dinner);
- highest grade (most animal friendly) free range eggs;
- rice, beans etc.

Soy milk apparently blocks the absorption of certain micronutrients. I remember reading the account of an American doctor who'd lived for years in Japan, who pointed out that the Japanese actually don't eat enormous amounts of soy products, and when they do, they tend to combine them with seaweed, which has a very high mineral content. He was against eating large amounts of soy.

:? Not my type. I tasted soy milk too many times (in accident :lol: ) I kinda.. Ah.. Kept regretting it.

Regardless, milk flavor in general isn't my type. Yet I prefer the creamy variety than soy milk.
But then again, I rarely ever drink milk or even add it to anything.

Soy milk is really bad, especially for males. I could spend all day linking to studies that prove this. There's quite alot of research done on soy.

I would stick to regular milk, and maybe almond milk if you have lactose intolerance. I don't know anything about hemp milk, but I suspect that's fine too.

Soy milk contains estrogen which is a sexual hormone that women are supposed to have more of in their bodies. Estrogen is generally worse for men to have than women.

Soya milk tastes disgusting.

I prefer oat milk.

I've gone back to regular milk, but I've been getting stomach pains. I don't know if I should try the oat milk again. Sigh.
