Hello, just dropped in here from a Google ad on YouTube.

Next week I´m talking to my GP so that he might send my the a psychologist or whatever. That would be the 4th time in my life but the first time that I have some idea of what might be going on.

I´m an IT guy, married, 2 kids.

As a child (and as and adult) I intensly persued something for a while then hopped onto the next. At some point I took a map and wrote down what I saw (City x lies on the east coast of country y - River x enters Sea y etc etc; some 150 of those notes).
Another time I read a series of six books with information about airplanes (type engines, horsepower, payload, cruise speed, you name it) and calculated what they could carry in weight of people, bombs, neutron stars etc).
A few times I started to sing out of nowhere in class.
Sometimes I failed tests in high school because instead of preparing I calculated atom halflives and the halflives of what they seperated into in a search for the element that would eventually seperated in the most atoms and the most steps to that. Also I tried to find if there were common elements all atoms would eventually end up as (I suspected oxygen, carbon and hydrogen).
I also loved atom substitution in molecules, swapping an atom for another that would still hold it together. On paper of course, I did not have Dexters Lab at my disposal.
The first time I bought a (second hand) car, I went to the library for old catalogues and before soon and knew all kinds of information about cars within my budget.
Same deal with motorbikes.
Every time I get to choose a new company car I get nuts, not because the car I eventually get but it´s an awesome excuse to study and compare specs.
My main social skill is being polite enough not to let it show that I´d rather be somewhere else when at a party (well, ok, it´s nice for an hour but after that, it´s a waste of time  ).

But wait, there´s more....... ok, you can relax, I won´t harass you with everything else. Fow now, that is

welcome...

I did something similar to the map thing as a kid. I would calculate drive times going various speeds (light, sound, mach 4, 60mph, 88mph) going from literally one town to another. I had a map with highlighter marking roads approx mileage and time it would take at the speed of sound, if it was longer then 50miles away from each other I would mark the time to destination every 50 miles.

EDIT:As quickly as I started, I stopped, and couldn't even look at it anymore.

Good to have you. I'm just getting here myself and it's a warm place. Quickly becoming my favorite internet spot to hang at.

That is cool, I used to that kind stuff as well. I´m also on a Dutch autism site and the stories of others brings back memories buried deep.

This one was actually triggered by your reply:
I used to calculate how fast you could travel to a star on a certain percentage of lightspeed. That speed was reached by accelerating at 1G, keeping that speed and decreasing at 1G as well. Basically you have to brake at a distance from the target that is the same as the distance it took to get to that speed. Ideally, you increase speed until halfway and then break. That way you have 1G for the whole trip. If I told you what other calculations I made for such a trip (including energy needed and the effect of the increasing and decreasing speed on the passage of time), we´d be sitting here for quite some time. I´ll keep that for other posts in the science department.

And thank you all for the welcome.

Since I turned like 15, I have been alot more philosophical about things. Drawn to less hard math-like science and more mind experiments.

This is getting creepy but can I say ´me too´?
It has taken a bit longer but especially since me early twenties I started on philosophy, from east to west, from ancient to contemporary. I started with Nietzsche, Socrates, Kant and Wittgenstein. Now it´s so bad I can´t even name them all (or properly pronounce them).. And I also include Douglas Adams, if only for Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy. Anyone who starts a book with ´In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move´, scores points with me.

I am now into hardcore into brain physiology (and the different states of it), pattern recognition, and trying to figure out the nature of things in a basic way.

Of course I'm too scared to goto college to learn about these things, so I gleen all I can off of lectures/audiobooks I find on the web.

As far as philosophy goes, I'm a strong Atheist (Dawkins is God), a strong Materialist (Dennett is the Son), a strong Determinist (Pinker is the Holy Ghost), and Trans-humanist (Kurzweil is my hero). Also recently leaning Satanist.
(note the names above are links)

Science can reverse engineer the universe to allow us to do anything (eventually), and the singularity is coming.

Indeed. The actual dead man´s hand comes from 5 card draw and needs a fifth card (nobody agrees which card was the fifth). But I did it with four cards because I love Omaha poker, a Texas Holdem variation that starts with four cards to each player. For the record, I´d play this hand carefully because it is not a top Omaha hand.
