Just a quick question. I recently saw something on the fact that scientists are/or have found why people on the spectrum repeat things. For me it's repeating almost anything that I can but the most time-consuming is re-watching programs.
I can't remember what it is, does anyone have the article or an explanation? I'm just curious :)
P.S I'm finally going for an ADOS assessment! After all of the assessments, questionnaires and meetings this will be the overall decider..!

I hope your ADOS assessment goes well! :D

I don't think I ever saw an article on why, but for me I watch things over and over because it is calming, it helps me make more sense of what I'm watching, and for some reason it just never gets boring.

Is this the article? https://spectrumnews.org/news/people-au ... -surprise/

I don't think that is what you are talking about, but it could be.

Yeah, I realized I don't have a good understanding of why I do it either when I was trying to explain it in my last post :D ! Anything related to an assessment/appointment is nerve-racking for me as well. No matter what the outcome is, I'm rooting for you! :D

Yeah I definitely do rewatch shows I've seen before. It definitely depends on the show, but if it's something I really care about a lot, then I have to watch the entire thing from start to finish, and because of that I'll often wait a few years in between rewatches so I won't get bored, but also partly because even though I enjoy the show, it can feel really overwhelming to start watching something again, especially if there are many seasons worth of material.

Then there are other shows that I really like(usually sitcoms) that I don't really care so much about watching from start to finish, but I'll just watch whatever random shows happen to be airing reruns at the time and I can enjoy it no matter how many times I've seen it.

What I find even more time consuming than rewatching shows, is rereading books. This can be especially frustrating if it's a series. Lets say I'm reading a series of books, but I don't get through the whole thing and pick it up again years later, or if there's a long period of time between when new books are released, I'll often have to go back and start the entire series from the beginning to refresh my memory. Even if a series is complete and I've read the whole thing before, if I want to reread one of the books, I generally have to reread the whole series.

I rewatch things obsessively. It isn't unusual for me to finish something and then begin at the beginning. I was very surprised when I learned there are many people that don't do this.

Me too! I always reread and rewatch things! Do most people listen to songs over and over, or is that a me thing too? I listen to songs over and over a lot of times 8O .

Some TV shows I've seen dozens of times. Breaking bad's not even that old I've seen it start to finish about 6 times. I pretty much always have something playing in the background when I work or even play video games. I guess I just like hearing familiar quotes while I go about my day.

When I was a kid, I used to buy singles on cassette. I would take them home and play them on the stereo, play the B-side, then turn over and play it again. Repeat until my parents were crazy. I think they must have thought personal stereos and headphones were the best inventions...

I don't think that is such a strange thing for a kid to do, but I still do it today. I can listen to things many times, repeatedly, back to back without them becoming boring.

Me too. I think my record for most times back to back in a row is around 500 or some ridiculously high number :D .

I thought re-watching/re-reading/re-listening to things was a completely normal NT-like thing to do. But someone here posted that it actually isn't (I thought everyone did this!), and I remember while I was still trying to figure out if I was on the spectrum or not, my therapist thought it was very unusual when I mentioned that I re-read books. Is this really something that is not done by NTs??

More on-topic: I re-watch things that I really like (ie. the movie Phoebe in Wonderland I've seen many many times, I'm on my 3rd time through watching all seasons of The Amazing Race, and I've seen all seasons of The Pretender 3-4 times). Books I re-read many many many times...most books I like generally about 10-15, and then when I was in highschool I read Tamora Pierce's books in a continual loop for several years. And I've probably read The Giver by Lois Lowry around 50 times :) Does anyone else like that book?

Music - I always end up repeating my favorite songs many times in a row :) I don't think I've reached 500 like Stamp y though ;)

I don't think anyone in the world has listened to "Paradise" by Coldplay as much as I have 8O .

I think there are some NT's that do this, but I think it is done for a different reason than autistics. Time for the NT/AS chat forum! :D

I've never read The Giver, Keladry. Is it good?

The Giver is very good - I've probably read it about 6 times total. The movie's really good too, although there does seem to be quite a bit that they changed unnecessarily from the book.

Wording this carefully to avoid spoilers...I think I've been successful...

I'm curious to know what people on the spectrum think of the structure and rules in the society in that book. Obviously, there are many things about that society that are bad (everyone on the spectrum would probably very quickly be released), but having all the rules very clearly spelled out and a rigid routine for every day does seem kind of appealing...

I like to reread my own posts over and over again and marvel at how witty I am.

You've done a very good job :) I agree that the movie diverted from the book a bit much. I highly recommend reading the book first for anyone interested in it.

I'm also curious what others would think. I realized after I was diagnosed that how much the rules/rigidity in the society might appeal to an aspie, and that might be part of the reason why I liked it so much. Also, the whole aspect of not feeling/discussing feelings. I suspect that I have alexithymia to a degree and so can see the appeal to the book.
