I've started a small support group in my hometown. My advice? Don't wait for permission to start your group. I asked around for ages and ages for various mental health establishments to support my idea, but I never got any responses. Eventually I just started it up on my own. Right now we're very small, but it's better than having nothing.
You're doing good work here. Starting down a path on your own is scary, but I promise you will gain so much awesome experience!
There's already a support group to which I belong that holds its meetings on the first Wednesday of every month, and it's hosted by the local chapter of the Autism Society; it's not terribly far but there might be some reason somewhere down the road to organize my own group near where I live.
