Lately, I have been thinking about the concept of special interests.

During the course of my life so far, I have had several obsessions with certain topics, and although they have ranged over what is typically expected, I do not believe that they would be considered special interests.

When people talk about special interests here, they tend to mention how those particular interests developed as a way for them to cope.

But for me, well.. my obsessions didn't develop as a way to cope with anything... they just kind of happened.

A friend of mine calls me "the cat lord".

I am known for my knowledge on cats, by my friends and family.

This thread was actually inspired by a conversation I had with a friend recently.

It started out with me telling them about this cat I saw outside that I had not seen before, and I was telling them about meeting this cat.

My friend was amused and remarked that I "sounded like a giddy school girl".

Later on, they called my interest in cats "insanely obsessed", to which I replied "It's not insane... it's just cats are to me... what Thunderbirds are to my dad (my dad really likes Thunderbirds, and often brings it up)" to which my friend replied, "Exactly, insane 8O ".

I love cats. I grew up around cats. Everyone in my family has cats. I have four cats myself. I'm known as a crazy cat lady in training.

My mother, to all intents and purposes, was a brown Abyssinian - a dainty little girl with bunny rabbit fur. She met me on my way home from school, walked me home, had and raised one surprise litter of kittens in my room, had me babysit them... sat with me every night as I did my homework... slept beside me with her head on my hand... would call for me if she couldn't find me in the house... kept watch over me when I was sick with strep throat and nearly died.

I've spent my life paying it forward, and have no regrets at all.

I'm a cat guy 100%. I sometimes wear shirts with cats on them to look less intimidating.

I was pretty much raised by my cat Buffy. Now I have two cats, Max and Minnie who are essentially my children. I can't imagine life without them.

I love cats. My last one was a gorgeous long-haired Manx (fanciest stray ever!) He hopped like a bunny rabbit, it was so cute! I miss him, but hope he is hopping through fields of wildflowers in a better place now.

My cats are my family, and really the only beings that get me.

Have you seen the All Cats Have Asperger's book?

Yeah, I saw about that on YouTube.

Most cats DO have Aspergers :D

Floyd was a dog-like neurotypical cat, though.

I love cats.

We can sit silently together with no expectations of having a conversation.

You mean you don't meow at your cat?

HALF loving-kindliness and half disdain,
Thou comest to my call serenely suave,
With humming speech and gracious gestures grave,
In salutation courtly and urbane;
Yet must I humble me thy grace to gain,
For wiles may win thee though no arts enslave,
And nowhere gladly thou abidest save
Where naught disturbs the concord of thy reign.
Sphinx of my quiet hearth! who deign’st to dwell
Friend of my toil, companion of mine ease,
Thine is the lore of Ra and Rameses;
That men forget dost thou remember well,
Beholden still in blinking reveries
With sombre, sea-green gaze inscrutable.

~Rosamund Marriott Watson

I was never a cat person, but a juvenile male was dropped on my property about 6 months ago. Life is precious, I wasn't going to take him to the pound just to be put down, so I adopted him. He pretty much keeps to himself, but he does follow me everywhere usually at about a five foot distance, and sometimes he gets completely rambunctious and forces me to play with him. Come spring I'm putting him out by my crops, I've had squirrel problems for the last three years so hopefully he eliminates them. I'm also really cautious about handling him, their bodies feel much more delicate than say a dog's.

Lost dragon... never mind about cats, I could speak to your dad for hours about Thunderbirds...

I had a cat named Cupcake when I was growing up and he was my best friend. Mostly my animals are still my best friends. :D
