Do you ever refer to the electronics device that you watch as the "telly"? I will only sometimes do so jokingly.

I just call it TV. I would also call it the idiot box or the boob tube, but most modern TV's are no longer box-like or have picture tubes. The idiocy is the one thing that hasn't gone away. It's worse than ever. Ick. :(

People in the 1950s used to call it the "television set."

Just like people in the 1930s called radios "radio sets."

"the telly" is a Brit thing. Americans never used it. Though we did hear folks say the expression on imported British shows on public television.
