Do you ever refer to the electronics device that you watch as the "telly"? I will only sometimes do so jokingly.

I just call it TV. I would also call it the idiot box or the boob tube, but most modern TV's are no longer box-like or have picture tubes. The idiocy is the one thing that hasn't gone away. It's worse than ever. Ick.

People in the 1950s used to call it the "television set."

Just like people in the 1930s called radios "radio sets."

"the telly" is a Brit thing. Americans never used it. Though we did hear folks say the expression on imported British shows on public television.
