Hi. I'm Adam. I want to know if something I often experience is related to my Autistic Spectrum Disorder, or is something that everyone can experience. I sometimes see a combination of small black lines and circles swirling in front of me, which I know aren't really there. I was wondering if other people on the Spectrum have experience this. It doesn't happen all the time, but is reasonably frequent.

Does this happen when your eyes are open? If so, you should maybe see an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

If they are closed, I don't find this too unusual.

It does happen when I'm awake yes. I don't think it's doing me any harm. I've seen them for my entire life, so it's probably not worth seeking medical help. I'm just curious.

I've never heard this sort of thing as being characteristic of autism.

Perhaps others will chime in, though.

Do you get migraines, AdamK?

I would definitely second seeing an ophthalmologist.

Are these not just floaters? In which case anyone can get them

I only see such black things when my eye is dirty. It does away after a few hours or after I splash my eyes with some water.
I see visual snow all the time ever since I remember, though.

I can only think of the distorted vision when being in a stressful state. Whenever i am close to an anxiety attack, i see things that are not there that are very similar what was being described by the OP

But anxiety can do all sorts of things to the vision.

Maybe it has to do with the temporal lobe and the occipital lobe being right next to each other.

Are you somehow irritated whenever
your vision changes, or are you in a calm state? I don't wanna diagnose anyone, i just wanna weigh out the options

Does it look kind of like this? (No, I didn't make this picture; I found it on google)

I get things like this and when I saw the eye doctor and I described it, he said it was a "visual migraine". He did check my eyes to make sure they were OK, which they were.

I asked my psychologist whether visual migraines were common among those with ASD, and he said not that he knew of.

In my language they are called mouches volantes, i.e. floaters in English.

Peeps who are nearsighted experience them more often. They also occur due to stress, diabetes and tiredness.

Most of the time, they are completely harmless. I have seen them since I was young. I tried to follow them when looking at the sky for years.
