I recently tried retail work and it gave me a physical meltdown.

I tried office work and it made me feel like an under appreciated machine.

Now, I’m planning on increasing the work I do from home to ensure I’m my own boss. The freelancing from home I have done has been the least stressful working situation for me.

What work environment do you prefer and why?

I'm retired now but working from home is best.
The less people the better.
Also the less noise, horrible lighting, bosses, parties, etc.

My DN got one of those IT certificates from a Big Name
and doubled his salary. Then he got another job, less
pay but much more congenial. I think if I had it all to
do over again, I'd be chasing those IT certificates.

I do mean certificate - he did it at night.

Does DN mean “dear niece?”

Ah...so you're writing your autobiography? I hope I'm in it

You can be my vastly improved brother.
Or will you be the one who takes me away from all that?

You shall ride.....to a nice Polynesian island with me :)

We could just sit by a little stream in our comfy chairs....and just shoot the breeze.

I definitely do better working at home. My interactions with others tend to be awkward, having the internet between me and them helps mask it. And no uncomfortable lunches or after hours associating.

Unfortunately, my results have varied depending on how much contact I needed to have with people online. I did really well on a team where we only had an online meeting a day and they set us loose to do our work otherwise. I got moved to a team where there was significantly more communication and it became similar to working in an office...which spiraled into me losing my job. I never really know what causes them to decide to cut me loose but I do pick up on them distancing themselves leading up to my dismissal.

I think working from home only prolongs my employment. Eventually it still seems to go sideways.

I haven't worked in an office much. I had a science internship for 10 weeks and I didn't much mind sharing an office with 3 other interns. It was quiet and no one talked to anyone else. I didn't like being pressured to have lunch with the other people in the office though. That was awkward. I wanted to sit by myself and read at lunch.

I volunteered at an LGBT center and shared an office with 1 person for a few weeks. I felt like I was being watched and didn't like it.

I think I'd be ok with working in an office if my co-workers were quiet and didn't pressure me to socialize. I work from home and, although it's a quiet environment, getting my own clients is difficult and makes the job a bit stressful.

I work from home both as a freelancer and as an employee.

I prefer the freelance work because everything is email-based and so I never have to talk to anyone in "real time". The Skype meetings as an employee are not fun, and I also have to be more involved in the general goings on of the company. I'd prefer to just be given my work and do it.

But, both of these jobs certainly beat working in a office! I can control my environment (e.g. desk is positioned how I want it, natural lighting only), I can wear whatever I want, I have some control over my hours/breaks...and of course it's quieter with fewer disturbances.
