Why is it that many don't want to be known by their name?

When I started registering on forums, I didn't like the idea of being known by any name other than my own. And I find it strange referring to people I've talked with on forums for years by some username like "decaffeinated". I hope things are going well for you, decaffeinated. I've really enjoyed getting to know you, decaffeinated. It's always seemed peculiar to me.

I can understand anonymity, which is why I've never posted my surname. But surely letting people know your first name isn't going to compromise your privacy.

Probably security reasons.....

Or a sense of modesty....

Or sort of a sense that other people online are "strangers."

I don't think there are too many well off Aspies with my first name. My screen name stands for been there, done that.

My name is Don. Also known as Wolfman/Wolfie (in real life as well). And "Spike."

My grandmother used to call me "Master Don Richard."

I'm not against usernames by any means. And I enjoy how clever some of them are. But I like now knowing kraftiekortie's name is Don. It makes him seem more real to me, if that makes any sense.

Because Luke doesn't allude to retro gaming

Did you like dinosaurs at the time? Could she have been calling you Mastodon Richard?

I just assumed that everyone except me had weird real names like Brunhilda, Baba Yaga, or Rumpelstiltskin.

But a mastodon isn't a dinosaur.

“Master” was the honorific given to boys under 18 in the old days.

When I registered here on Wrong Planet in 2006, I felt like an anonymous figure who was out-of-place during my high school years, hence my username.

On another note, whenever my uncle visits, he often calls me "Bubba", and I hate it, so the next time he visits, I am going to make sure I stay out of the house! :x

i feel very weird when i remember people here don't know my name, although my username is my name without vowels maybe people don't know what it is??? (btw, it's leticia)

but sometimes i feel amazed by people not knowing things about me because i have difficult in understanding alterity. like, if i know something, i assume everyone knows it too.

Cute pun, though.

Personally, it's to keep a divide between online and off. I'd prefer the people I only know of through the internet to remain as such unless they have earned enough of my trust, and I prefer the people I know offline not know of what I post online. That, and I have a bit of a dislike for my actual name, so while I can't really avoid it offline, I can while I'm online.
