You're not drinking the right coffee?

Even reducing sugar may help

For me, and both a lot of autistic people and people with ADHD, coffee acts as something that calms rather than energizes. For this exact reason for years I would sneak coffee beans into school because crunching them would help calm the over stimulation a bit and help me focus.

You could be physically exhausted and not just mentally fatigued.

Caffeine stimulates the nervous system, but if the muscles are over-worked and saturated with lactic acid, then no amount of caffeine will help -- you may end up exhausted, yet unable to sleep.

It's entirely depends on you. Try something else, maybe.
And some explained some things to you on how caffeine works, and how some may react differently with it.

In my own case with a certain brand of warm brown coffee;
Drink 1/4, nothing much happens except taste the coffee.
Drink 1/3, I'll wake up right.
Drink 1/2, I may get occasional tremors, restlessness, palpitations...
Drink 2/3, likely end up weirder, disorganized, and mood swings.
Drink 3/4 to a whole cup, I'd likely fall asleep within an hour.

This for me, too.

Coffee tends to make me more high strung than awake. If I haven't slept well it won't help.

Coffee levels off my mood. I need a cup or two in the morning.

Coffee seems to make me more tired than anything.

Coffee is not really a good way to get energy. You get a quick boost but then it goes down again. I recommend eating a salad instead. Raw vegetables are awesome for energy.

If you consume caffeine on a regular basis you can build up a tolerance making it less effective. Other people simply aren't effected by it. And some claim caffeine actually makes them sleepy.

One coffee will keep me sharp to drive all night. I only use it in emergencies, because it can upset me for a week. If you don't wake up, maybe your body is demanding more sleep

Drinking coffee makes me high-sensory, tired, shaky, and dehydrated.

Coffee is a diuretic. It's likely dehydrating you.

I drink coffee every morning. I don't think it does too much to me, as I have been drinking it for 40+ years. Drinking it after 3PM does have an effect on me, unless it's decaf.

I think it is a long lasting habit with me more than anything else. I have a 4 bags of beans from my favourite roaster, so when they are gone, I'm going to try to break this habit. See what happens. I quit cold turkey years ago as I was drinking WAY too much. It fried me. I had to continue, but wean myself off it slowly, to a more acceptable amount.

The only way I would give up caffeine is if it was literally life or death. That makes it sound like I'm a caffeine fiend. I used to drink far more coffee than I do now. I limit myself to one cup in the morning using 3 Tablespoons of fine grounds, the same after lunch and generally the same in the evening. It doesn't affect my ability to sleep at all. If I'm tired, I'm tired. So even though I don't drink a large amount of coffee, it's very important to me.

It's both stimulating and calming for me. Tea is even more calming. I drink green and black teas as well.

I'm a coffee snob though. I don't drink gas station/restaurant "gut rot" coffee which is mainly comprised of robusta rather than arabica beans. That stuff can give me a headache. Starbucks is gross as well.
