Okay, that thread title grabbed everybody's attention. I still like a lot of animated shows written for adults like Futurama, Beavis & Butthead, King of The Hill...but I'll be honest and otherwise say that the "standard" for adult animation today tries very hard to look as offensive to people as possible and squeeze in sophomoric or black humor wherever it can. It comes off to me as very cliched and deliberate. Don't forget that social-political-religious commentary that gets in your face sometimes. We get it, we know what the guys who are writing and commentating on, but not everyone wants to watch a show or movie for any commentary or even to the point of being psychotic jokes and stereotyping.

I know this is just a more personal vent of mine since these shows otherwise remain very popular and have high viewership. I personally think the "standard" lately is ridiculous.

I can't stand anything by Seth MacFaralane like Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show. They're not just offensive, they are stupid and downright not funny.

There was a time when Family Guy was OK but not anymore.

I love Futurama and the older Simpsons episodes though.

Right. My original post came off as hypocritical because there are people who also find my style of humor offensive. I don't support any censorship, but Seth MacFarlane and others who roughly clone their style are downright not funny like TW1ZTY already mentioned. Not always comparable situations IMO.

Since the topic is adult animation, and not specifically mentioned as American cartoons, I am going to throw my hat in. I really am not much of a fan of a lot of the adult cartoons already mentioned as a problem above, such as Family Guy, honestly they feel more childish than anything rather than one could say actually adult. At the same time, if you are looking for that sort of thing, maybe not feel too tied down to what just comes out of America.

Like see something like Aggrestuko (available in English on Netflix).

Proof that animation for adults, does not have to rely on being crass and or stupid. There being other Japanese animation that can be made for adults without being some of the childish found in the likes of Family Guy. Such as Recovery of an MMO Junkie.

What is said here reminds me of 'Bee and Puppycat: The Future of New Adult Animation?' by Henry Kathman

Honestly I really can't stand Japanese animation that makes light of pedophilia. Like "Azumanga Daioh" for example. Why the hell would anybody find a perverted old teacher stalking his students funny? :|

And there are far worst examples than that show, like "No Money". I'm not even going to get into that one...

Azumanga Daioh does have the weird blop in its run with a single character, that feels against the rest of the show, it is like the other characters don't know how to react. But not every show has that, if the existence of such things is off-putting, it is generally simple to avoid, especially in the sort of 'adult' shows that I gave examples of.

A show I'd highly recommend would be Violet Evergarden, one of my favorite of the year. It's about a soldier's attempt to reconnect with their feelings and to find personal meaning in day to day life after the war is over, and to deal with integrating back into a peaceful society.

Netflix also have a large amount of Western comedic shows, like the critically acclaimed Bojack Horseman, which delves into mental health, drug abuse and other adult issues. It has a superb voice cast.

Yeah I know not every Japanese animation is like that. I try to avoid the ones that are.

One of my favorite adult Japanese animations was Pet Shop of Horrors. It was a good horror anime. I also liked Mermaid's Forest and Mermaid's Scar. Both were horror too.

It's not just cartoons that are for adults (or "dolts", rather) that suck. The today's cartoons that are targeted for children also suck as well.

There was once a time when SpongeBob, Teen Titans, and Fairly Odd Parents used to be pretty senseful. But now they are all become stupid and senseless, and many of the characters in those shows are like terrible, treating each other like garbage for little to no reason whatsoever.

Forgive me for being off-topic here, but I'd thought I like to post some videos here:

BTW, The adult animations I really detest are:
-Panty & Stocking
-American Dad
-Family Guy
-Beavis and Butthead
-Sword Art Online and Accel World (Yes, they should be considered as adult animations, at least in the English dub!)
-Angel Beats
-The Simpsons (used to be decent, now it's horrible)
-And many more I can't name right now!

I agree, kid's cartoons really do suck today. Spongebob used to be great but now the show is just so stupid and annoying. When will it be put out of it's misery? :?

I think you just need to broaden your viewing, there's lots of good stuff out there currently running. These are just a few shows that have aired this year.

For films, I Want To Eat Your Pancreas and Maquia both came out this year too, both excellent works from Japan. Anomalisa came out just a few years ago, the latest of Charlie Kaufman's consistently stellar films.

I have seen Disenchantment (only one so far, too lazy to watch a whole show sometimes), am I the only one who thinks the princess is kind of cute? :)

Brickleberry rocked! Too bad it only lasted three seasons. Its follow-up, Paradise PD, was nowhere near as funny.

F Is For Family I also like. It's not that funny but it is brutal in its honest depiction of a dysfunctional 70's family.

South Park I used to like, but now that I know the creators of that show lean to the right, I can see through their politics and the series just isn't funny anymore.

Mr. Pickles is pretty good. The grandpa is my favourite character.

Bordertown only lasted one season but I thought it had potential. Oh well.
