What are your health/fitness resolutions for 2019?
Include goals and methods, and we can encourage each other.

Mine is to reduce my waist size. Right now it's at 36 inches (91.5cm).
Apparently a waist circumference of 80 centimetres or more (for women) indicates internal fat deposits and a measurement of 88 centimetres or more indicates a higher increased risk of chronic disease. So I'm going to see if I can at least get down below 34 inches (about 87.5cm).

I'm hopeless at sticking to diets and I'm on meds that are notorious for weight gain (mirtazapine/remeron) so wish me luck! I'm attempting to cut down on processed carbs, going wholegrain, and I'll try cutting out snacks between meals as well.

I'm working as a truck driver now which is a ridiculous situation for following any kind of diet. Before this, I did lose 10 pounds and gained a few back. I'm just under 240 now in my early 40s and I want to get on a path to bringing this weight down.

I'm considering gimmicks like Keto just becaue I hear other drivers have success with it and these foods seem like they could have more satiety to manage appetite. I'm not sure what I can realistically do for exercise besides walking when I can.

I lost my weight but completely cutting exercise out. You just need to count calories this is a great calculator for helping you figure how many calories you need to cut https://www.calculators.org/health/weight-loss.php .

That's impressive weight loss, well done!

I've found dark chocolate can be quite satisfying in small quantities, I can usually limit myself to a piece or two (not sure I could cut it out altogether, that's my last resort) - but good luck with your efforts!

Had I not cut it out all together I would have continued to eat 1000+ calories a day of chocolate. I ate the same 2/3 meals for about 10 weeks but it was worth it once I got over the hurdle.

I've heard keto can give impressive results in the short term, but is not a healthy diet for the long term for most people, as our bodies aren't designed for that much animal protein.

I'm guessing it might be a good one to try if you're eating at truck stops as there's always plenty of protein foods like eggs and sausages, and you might be able to get salads as well to keep up the fibre and vitamins.
And when you go back onto carbs, you could maybe swap out the high-fat carbs like pies and chips for things like baked potatoes and beans?

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Whoa, yes, that's quite a chocolate habit, I can see why you might need to cut it out altogether.

I liked that link you put up - haven't read it all but enjoyed the cartoons!

I wish you the best of luck. with the standard caution of "your mileage may vary," I can tell you what works for me-
*cut out refined carbs as much as possible, that includes sugars and starches outside of raw veggies and fruits.
*cut out anything with corn syrup in it.
*cut out fruit juices and beverages sweetened with sugar, fructose or corn syrup.
*cut out anything containing gluten [wheat] and gliadin [oats] as they are inflammatory. IOW, wholegrain doesn't work.
*cut out white rice, white potatoes, white anything, including all pasta.
*avoid popcorn, as it is highly inflammatory.
*most days, rain or shine, walk fast on hilly terrain, walk like one is late for work.
*core exercises every day, which together with vigorous walking will improve muscle tone, increase muscle mass and increase metabolism/calorie burning.

Some excellent advice, thanks.
I concur on many of those - I've found limiting refined carbs, sugary food and sweet drinks (including juice) is especially useful for keeping my nervous system under control.
Hadn't heard about oats being a problem before.

The ones I haven't tried yet are cutting out gluten, potatoes and pasta. Possibly I could do it if I was only cooking for myself but I've got teenagers to feed as well. And I really  my starches.
What do you eat in place of those?

MrsPeel, starches don't necessarily love one back. :o what I eat- quinoa, Amaranth, brown/wild rice, squash, peas and beans, nuts and some seeds. occasional yam or sweet potato as a treat. no red meat. spare chicken and turkey, mostly salmon, mackerel and tuna, no more than half a can a day of the first two, one can per day of the tuna [mercury concerns]. it seems oats/gliadin is less offensive than wheat gluten, but not inoffensive in the least. so mebbe eat oats once in a while? that is what I do. I have TMJ so no chewy things like raw carrots and such, so I drink veggie juice. I eat fake bread [not made of wheat or oats] now and then. lotta vitamin supplements.

Hm, I've now got lip sores & mouth ulcers.
I always think they're related to lack of B vitamins - which means I should probably keep a few grains in my diet for now.
Unless they're related to the tick bite I got on boxing day??
(Should one go the doctor after a tick bite?) :?

tick bite, i'd go see your doc, especially if it is something like a deer tick which can have severe consequences if untreated. cold sores and mouth ulcers can be diminished immune system or over-acidic body chemistry, the latter was my situation until I cut out the starches and sugars. I take vitamins. you don't need grains to get your b-vitamins.

Thanks for the advice. Think I will go see the doctor about the tick bite, it's gone a bit swollen.
Got it here in Aus so the ticks feed off wallabies and the like, but they can spread a few diseases.
Officially there's no Lyme disease here but there's recognition of some 'Lyme-like disease', they just haven't identified exactly which bacterium is the culprit.
Now I'm scaring myself... will definitely go see the doctor.
