I want to ask because of my OCD which I'm trying to improve.

1st Question: If you go outside on a bus or train or sit in the passenger seat of someone else's car that is full of mess everywhere and the back of your head touches the seat's head rest, when you get home do you wash your hair?

2nd Question: If you find some money on the floor and pick it up would you wash your hands when you got home?

3rd Question: If you buy food in the supermarket do you wipe the packaging after getting home?

4th Question: Do you get colds, flus or other infections much?

5th Question: Do your TV remote controls, computer keyboards, computer mice and door handles feel clean or do they feel sticky or dirty?

No to all of them except maybe the last. The controls of my stuff feel okay to me because I am used to them. May feel a bit unclean to someone else.

5 no, but there is dust visible on the part of the spacebar I don't touch.

I wash my hands after using the toilet, and, if possible, before re-adjusting my clothing, and before preparing food for guests. Otherwise, the most frequent reason for hand washing is not wanting to get my own body oil onto my work in the shop, or having gotten dirty there. My first profession, silversmithing, requires antiseptic cleanliness on the work, while spreading dirt around the area, so I got good at zones.
I have an MD friend who encouraged his wife to let their son try eating things like garden soil to build up his immunity. The rise in severe allergies is probably related to immune systems not being developed with gentle exercise. Healthy skin has many benign microbes, leaving no opportunity for unhealthy ones, which can easily colonise a sterile medium.

I respect your opinions. It's clear to me my cleanliness-obsessed brain has become irrational. I've thought of another question now, annoyingly!

If anyone cares to answer this one too, feel free. If you have a runny nose and you had to keep wiping bits of mucous that were running would you keep washing your hands? This is one of the ones that is most time consuming for me.

My nose keeps running at times and I get tissue after tissue to wipe it but I keep fearing my finger touched a bit of the mucous on the tissue, or it seems it did, or the back of my hand touches it slightly, and so I can end up washing my hands 10 times in a few minutes.

I use cloth handkerchiefs because disposable stuff further irritates my nose. I use enough folds to isolate anything I'm using it for, and if I make a mistake, I usually find it sufficient to wipe my fingers clean on another bit of cloth, such as my pant legs. Maybe you can taper off by keeping a small moist towel and a dry one handy.

I have OCD and the answer is no to each of your questions. My OCD mainly manifests itself in excessive empathy and moral scrupulosity. Cleanliness isn't much of an issue anymore.

No, no, no, no and yes (commonly).

In a similar vein, though, I do go to the bathroom to wash my hands after shaking hands with certain people. Also, I don't like lending my pen to people in general, because I don't like to use it after they have handled it. I had to throw out a pair of ear-bud headphones after a friend of mine listened to my MP3 player using them for a few seconds.

Wiping snot off my hand with a tissue would suffice for me ( no tissues , use my clothes ).

I have a bit of a mental issue cleaning up my GF tissues though but I can do it.

No to all except the last - I know they're dirty and the iPad screen gets greasy but it doesn't bother me unless it gets really gross.

For 1 to 4, no. For 5, I rarely notice how they feel, I just use them. If a device gets truly sticky or particularly dirty I usually notice and dislike it. Pretty normal really.

AFAIK I don't have OCD, at least not to a clinical level. I get a few sensory issues such as not liking my hands to be sticky or greasy, but it never feels particularly urgent to clean them, just kind of yukky until I do. I'm perhaps less tolerant than many about picking up infected matter from toilet door handles etc., but I think it's fairly rational, and again it's not terribly urgent for me to stay clean, just desirable, and I have a fair amount of confidence in my immune system. I'm just kind of health conscious and generally risk averse but I think it's all based on logic with some perfectionism in the mix.

No.

Only if I'm going to eat. I never put food in my mouth with unwashed hands.

No.

Quote:
4th Question: Do you get colds, flus or other infections much?

I do seem to pick up colds quite a lot. But I use the same earplugs that sometimes don't always get washed for ages, yet I never get ear infections. I asked my doctor if lack of hygiene in my ears might contributing to my frequent colds, but she said no.

5th Question: Do your TV remote controls, computer keyboards, computer mice and door handles feel clean or do they feel sticky or dirty?

Well they feel dusty and sometimes sticky but it doesn't bother me too much.
