What's the most 'psychedelic' instrument?

I think it's between a didgeridoo for bass and a sitar. Electronica in general works well too (as Pink Floyd shows), but in terms of real instruments, those two in my opinion... any others?

Sitar for me. Perhaps a theramin, but then again I don't know if I'd consider it psychedelic. A hurdy gurdy has a pretty trippy drone.

I'd say either a Chamberlin or a Mellotron.

They have a keyboard like a piano, but each key plays a distinctive pre-recorded note from a tape. All sorts of crazy sounds can be played by the user depending on tape selection and delay used. Very big during the psychedelic period in the later 1960s.

The sitar, theremin, and minimoog synthesizer have to be the big three for me

Korg MS-20 is gnarly acid...because of its nasty filter... aggressive, soundscapes, efx, evolving, bubbling, noise... etc

I don't like it, however it fits the criteria. Sitar also, I agree...both not my type of music tho

Organs and harpsicords can create extremely psychedelic sounds.

Anything can sound psychedelic if effected enough. I once played sax and flute in an electronica band, we would sample stuff like babies crying and telephone answering machines. I played sax on one track which was 100% effected... that was pretty weird.

If you want the answer for an acoustic instrument, I'd say hammered dulcimer, that always has an ethnic/hippy vibe.

... and an ocarina

... and flutes played in harmony.
