When I was a kid, there was a commercial for Ford pick trucks with Bob Segar's "Like a Rock" playing in the background. I heard it was "Leg-a-ruh" and for years was constantly asking what the heck "leg-a-ruh" was supposed to mean until my dad figured out what commercial I was talking about and said, "He's saying, "Like a rock".

My boyfriend showed me the song "Spinning Around" by a group called Jump 5. I heard "What we're doing doesn't need a sequel" as "What we were doing last night was evil'. And "all these definite maybes" as "all these deaf-ning babies".

Remember the lyric: "… You spin me right round, baby by Dead or Alive. I thought it was, "you spin my rice around...

That's nothing. When I was a kid I used to get into punch-out, knock down, actual fist fights with my teenage aunt over the Beatles, "They call me mellow yellow". I thought they were saying, "They call me manu yanu." I was willing to bleed for it too. My poor aunt. I would attack her first even though she patiently tried to tell me the real lyric. I didn't want to hear it and thought she was just stupid. Ah kids..... 8O

Jimmy Cliff. Not Bob Marley.

Don't what the real lyric is that you're mishearing. "The bottom will drop out" maybe?

Neil Young. Helpless: "Big Birdflies across the sky..."

To this day when I hear the song I have an image of Big Bird from Sesame Street, who can't fly, flying across the sky.

Yes Naturalplastic, the correct lyric is "the bottom will fall out".
Magna -- I LOVE HELPLESS! That's so funny!

Paul Young
"Every time you go away, you take a piece of meat with you".

Sex Pistols ~ God Save the Queen
"God save the Queen, the fashion regime." (fascist)
"Will touch your wife's bum" (potential H-Bomb)

Usually with an odd sounding lyric ...you can suss it out.

Like when George Harrison sings that she "attacks me like no other" you can figure out that its PROBABLY "attracts me like no other".

But some song writers have some rather surreal lyrics that could actually be....ANY thing.

Bob Dylan has that song "oooh weee.. ridin' me high, tomorrow is the day that my brides a gonna come...". So I imagine a wild west saga, and this rancher guy happy that his mail order bride is gonna arrive for him there on the frontier.

The song is "You Aint Goin Nowhere".

But later in the song Dylan sings what sounds like "Genghis Khan, and his brother Don, could not keep on keeping on...".

Its a great image. The most ruthless conqueror in Asia having a Billy Carter type brother who messed things up. But I don't know what that has to do with the rancher character. Friends have told me its "Genghis Khan couldn't keep his kings supplied with... something or other". I like my version better! :D

My mom heard "Dude looks like a lady" as "Do the funky lady" for a long time.

There was a song that we sang in church as a kid that had a line that went "All the ends of the Earth have seen the power of God." I thought it was "All the ants of the earth..." It made sense to me, as maybe meaning all creatures down to the little ants

My cousin from Montreal thought O Canada said "We stand on God for thee", instead of "on guard".
