On Reddit, which I’m quitting because of this, I said to someone who had almost been at one of the shootings had his plans not been canceled...”I’m so sorry. That’s terrible. I can’t believe people use guns the way they do.”

I didn’t understand what was wrong with it, but it must have been taken as sarcastic or an insult because it was downvoted. I will never forgive myself. I just insulted someone who had been through a shocking event.

The idea of me taking it personally when someone misinterprets what I say is kind of foreign to me.
You didn't say anything horrible, a person horribly misinterpreted you.

Forgive yourself. I can't work people out. A few years ago when I first went online there was a site which was designed to connect people with each other who had lost touch. I found new friends on there. Something had happened which I didn't take any notice of as it was partially private conversation wven though if we wanted to we could read it, but I didn't read it as it wasn't for me.
I then was trying to explan the concept of sin, but I was giving an example before I said anything about the concept. I said that as far as the law goes, anyone who is driving their car at any speed over the speed limit be it 1mph or 100mph... All are criminals as all have broken the law... (I didn't get as far as saying about sin and Gods laws when someone said to the lady "Are you alright?" I thought What's going on? The other lady said something like "You really believe that people are criminals if they are caught speeding?" I said "Yes" as I admit myself I have driven a bit fast on occasions though I usually try not to... But anyway. No one told me that the previous conversation had been that the lady was upset because she had been caught speeding. I wrote a brief apology and quickly left the site. I rejoined much later... Almost a year? I rejoined but never posted and never added anyone as friends... Just rejoined incase anyone wanted to get in touch. No one did, and then the site closed. It later reopened as a dating site.

I think what you said sounds compassionate.

Yeah, me too :?

I think it would be more accurate to see this as "somebody had a horrible reaction to something I said online".

I hate the internet. I often say really rude things, horrible things. Then I get off line and beat myself up. Imagine if the internet no longer existed, those events would not happen. I am about to get an online job. Basically, my computer will be a job portal and I might be less interested in it. Just the job and occasionally sending e-mail. Like it used to be back in 1999.

I don't think you said anything wrong. People today are so temperamental anymore that one has to tip-toe around them and that's what I saw.

Technically that's not correct. At least here in most states here in the U.S.A., speeding is legally classified as a "violation" but not a "crime."

I'm sorry to hear this.

I'd stay away from very large public forums like Reddit, especially those that rely on downvotes as a cheap substitute for moderation. If a forum is too large, it's all too easy for misunderstandings to snowball rather than get resolved.

I didn't see anything wrong with your comment. You sounded so supportive. And you are right that people use guns the way they do. It might have been taken as a anti gun comment. People who are pro gun feel threatened when they hear about gun control or hear about how people use their guns the poor way. If you were on a conservative forum, that is why.
