Hi,

I just ran into this situation again not too long ago watching tv, I didn't have subtitles set to on,
but because the dialogue in the beginning of the episode was in a different language, I was getting
the translated words on the screen. Most of the time I'd say I can do fine without subtitles when
I'm watching something, but there are times when I am unable to know what that word or numerous
ones were that they just said.

I have difficulty reading the subtitles quick enough before it disappears and the next set pops right
up. When I'm able, I normally pause the video when the next subtitle comes up. That does get annoying
because it feels like a thirty minute film turns into a 35-40 minute one, being able to pay less attention
to the sceneries and characters.

I hope this all makes sense, I'm trying to minimise the amount of this post so I don't end up with a chapter
long post here.

I had the same problem as a child, but it went away with time as I learned to read faster... then again, I had lots of shows to practice on since most stuff doesn't get dubbed in to my native language.

I don't have a solution for it, but I have the same problem, and it's not improving. I have family members who have complained about the same as well.

I don't do movies in languages I don't know anymore, i miss out on so much of the content on screen when i have to read films. It's just not worth it.
The worst I 'read' was Japanese film Confessions. Great movie really, but very dialogue heavy, lots to read.

yeah sometimes they shout or whisper or mumble, and it's often background noise too (in the movie or around me) which doesn't help
that is why I opt for subtitles even in my own language, so I can check if needed, even if it also os distracting
