Quote:
The novel features a love triangle between the Phantom, Christine, and Raoul. Raoul is seen as Christine's childhood love whom she is familiar with and has affection for. He is rich and therefore offers her security as well as a wholesome, Christian marriage. The Phantom, on the other hand, is not familiar. He is dark, ugly, and dangerous and therefore represents the forbidden love. However, Christine is drawn to him because she sees him as her Angel of Music, and she pities his existence of loneliness and darkness.

Rebellion Against Society

The Phantom is in rebellion against society. His obsession with revenge is spurred by righteous anger borne from the conviction that society has rejected him. Like so many who become unwilling outcasts, he internalizes that rejection by rejecting his own identity and putting on the persona of the Phantom in the belief that without the masquerade, society would take no notice of him. Whether the Phantom is actually justified in feeling outrage at his ostracism is a key open question of the story.

Looks versus Talent

One theme found in the novel that seems to have never gone out of style is the propensity for those who look good to excel in competitions against more talented, but less aesthetically pleasing, rivals. Erik is unquestionably a great talent, but his dreams of fame and stardom are forever doomed by his disfigured face. Even today, this story is played out on a daily basis; for every Erik forced to become a Phantom because his talent goes unappreciated, there are a dozen, a hundred, or even thousand Kardashians. Given this reality, who wouldn’t go mad in the sewers?

Mask (Symbol)

Erik's masks -- and he has several -- allow him to pass briefly in human society without being noticed. Yet the mask also sets him apart from other human beings, with whom he does not interact directly. He is therefore alienated from human society despite his ongoing attempt to join it. His own mother would not kiss him, but rather forced him to wear a mask. It is Christine's willingness to take his hand and kiss him on the forehead that breaks through to Erik and inspires him to act with kindness and compassion.

That musical was a special interest of mine when I was 5-6  I've heard many people suspect the Phantom is an Aspie.

<The Preamble at the beginning of Act I:>

Pepe, the misbegotten son of the underworld, sits in the bowels the Opera house, tormented by his disfigurement and his rejection by society.

He is a dark and ugly character, beset by a myriad of doubts as to his worth.
He has no purpose to speak of other than to plot revenge against his cruel tormentors.

His search for the comfort of others has been met with profound failure and that has twisted his view of life.
The hope in his heart has turned into black coal, smouldering with the fires of despair, cynicism and the desire for restitution.

He has a gift of looking past the pedestrian concerns of the proletariat, but that only sets him apart and amplifies his isolation.

He has no illusions about life.
There is little of value to be seen.
It is superficial and hollow, without a soul.
Life gives him no succour.

<end of preamble>

I highly doubt this would work out for me.

The phamton of the opera

In sleep he sang to me, in dreams he came
That voice which calls to me and speaks my name
And do I dream again for now I find
The phantom of the opera is there inside my mind
And though you turn from me to glance behind
The phantom of the opera is there inside your mind
Those who have seen your face draw back in fear
I am the mask you wear, it's me they hear
Your spirit and my voice in one, combined
The phantom of the opera is there inside my mind
He's there, the phantom of the opera
He's there, the phantom of the opera
He's there, the phantom of the opera

The Phantom of the Opera Theme was stolen from Pink Floyd's Echoes.

(Sorry, I don't know how to attached YouTube videos to forum comments)

The riff is most prominent at 6:10.

But I still love Phantom, and it stands as my favorite musical.

Will have a listen to that.
1962 movie version used Bach Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor

The Music of the Night
Andrew Lloyd Webber

Night time sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness wakes and stirs imagination
Silently, the senses abandon their defenses
Helpless to resist the notes I write
For I compose the music of the night
Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Hearing is believing, music is deceiving
Hard as lightening, soft as candlelight
Dare you trust the music of the night?
Close your eyes for your eyes will only tell the truth
And the truth isn't what you want to see
In the dark it is easy to pretend
That the truth is what it ought to be
Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it secretly possess you
Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness which you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night
Close your eyes
Start a journey to a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Close your eyes and let music set you free
Only then can you belong to me
Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night
You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night

... and Pepe ... let’s not forget this Aussie ode to The Phantom ...

“The Angel and the Madman” - Moving Pictures

Moving Pictures also wrote/sang the anthem “What About Me?” interestingly ...
