I hate the 'word' mmmm.

It can mean everything.

It can mean 'I hate you'. It can mean 'I strongly disagree'. It can mean 'so-so'. It can mean 'I agree'. It can mean 'I strongly agree'. It can even mean 'I love you'.

Absolutely useless to the hearer.

And useful to the person saying it cos if you call them out on it they can say they meant something else entirely.

Using words and even other more clear gestures means that I will actually understand what you say.

(Nobody on here, my mother is worse for it but I know loads of ppl who do it irl)

I hear you.
I personally don't have a biggie with it, since I've learned to look very carefully in peoples eyes (yes I have autism) to get some clues from facial expressions as for what they actually mean.
Doesn't work all the time, but usually.

 I have never had a problem with the "Mmmmm" response. I have heard people use it when they were delighted or humored.

"Mmmm" can also be used when someone cries which I have done in the past to express my frustration if I felt something was unfair.

"Mmmmmmm" can also be used with a growl as a sign of annoyance or anger

See I try that.

And my mum still denies it.

She looks disagreeable in her face (face down, tears in her eyes, scrunched up face etc), says something as vague as mmmm/hmmm. But agrees with me?

I find it really confusing & my SAD tells me she's judging me/sad/angry.

She says she looks disagreeable to the point of tears whenever she's tired. Must be terribly tiring, ironically.

I’ve seen some very nice people with very sad/angry faces.

Sometimes, how they look and what they wear doesn’t reflect the person.

I once knew a guy who looked like a Black Nationalist (Afro, daishiki, the whole nine yards); yet, he was actually a soft-spoken intellectual.

There are many hints to look for, but I think it takes practice, and may still not work.
Does she nod slightly when she mmms? Could be she agrees, but is sad or disturbed about something.
Does she rub her feet against each other or show other signs of discomfort? Could be she agrees but is a bit ashamed of the situation.
Just a few thoughts, I am far from an expert.

One thing I think of is, why just mmmm?
Isn't it the same with "yes", "maybe", "you decide", or "excuse me"?
I think those can be at least as tricky to interpret correctly.

I take words at literal value.

So yes works for me as a positive.

Mmm and Hmm mean both yes and no.

Yeah she's a nice person.

I don't not see niceness in her face.

But I see upset. Like she's been deeply wounded.

That makes me question what I'm saying in case I'm hurting her. Or simply boring her.

This used to annoy me, but I learned to recognize tone and facial expressions better so now I can kind of get what people mean when they make that noise. I don't even attempt to use things like that though because I am so monotone that if I did that I'd just seem like a complete uninterested as*hole no matter what I meant by it. It's very, very tone dependent. lol

"Mmmm Mmmm Good" was the trademark phrase of Campbell's Soup.

My cousin can do it right.

She smiles as she does it.

Also she never does it in a negative way. And she extends it.

We have "Mmmmm, Marabou" for the probably most popular chocolate here.

I think it's the difference between mm and mmmmm.

mmmmm to me says happy.

mm says unhappy or cross
